Chapter 42: Ambushed

Upon hearing this, Wang Zhendong's eyes instantly lit up. "Brother Wen, I... did I hear you correctly?"

"You want me to work with you?"

Chen Xuewen said, "That's right. Don't you want to?"

Wang Zhendong hurriedly shook his head and waved his hands. "I do! I'd love to!"

"Brother Wen, wait a moment. I'll go quit my job with the boss right now and come with you immediately!"

Chen Xuewen smiled. "Aren't you even going to ask what I want you to do?"

Wang Zhendong said with a solemn expression, "Brother Wen, if you're asking me to work with you, that means you think highly of me. What other questions could I possibly have?"

"Besides, back in the day inside, you took such good care of me, Brother Wen. I've kept all of that in my heart."

"No matter what you ask me to do, I'll listen to you!"

Chen Xuewen nodded with satisfaction. He had to admit that Wang Zhendong was quite a sharp-witted fellow.

At that moment, the voice of Skinny Monkey came from behind, "Brother Wen, how is it?"

"Did you find it?"

He walked over with a few people, among whom was the restaurant owner.

As soon as Skinny Monkey saw Wang Zhendong, and then saw the phone in Wang Zhendong's hand, his eyes widened instantly. "Damn it, so it was you, you bastard!"

"Motherfucker, daring to steal my phone, I see you're tired of living!"

The owner also walked over, cursing angrily, "Wang Zhendong, are you out of your damn mind?"

"I hired you to work here, and you're pulling petty thievery in my shop?"

"You just wait. Once the enforcement team gets here, I'll make sure you get a few extra years!"

A crowd behind them also began pointing and chattering, making Wang Zhendong's face flush with extreme embarrassment.

Seeing this, Chen Xuewen raised his voice and said, "You've all misunderstood."

"He didn't steal the phone."

"He just saw a phone on the ground and picked it up."

"I saw it with my own eyes just now."

Hearing this, everyone looked stunned.

Wang Zhendong, however, was filled with gratitude. Chen Xuewen's words not only got him out of a tight spot but, more importantly, saved his face.

Skinny Monkey looked at Chen Xuewen in confusion, wanting to say something, but Chen Xuewen stopped him with a wave of his hand.

Chen Xuewen handed the phone back to Skinny Monkey. "Monkey, since the phone is found, let's not make a fuss over it."

As he spoke, he gave Skinny Monkey a subtle wink.

Skinny Monkey immediately nodded. "Alright, since the phone's found anyway, let's not waste any more time."

Chen Xuewen settled the bill and led the group out of the restaurant.

Along the way, Chen Xuewen explained Wang Zhendong's background to Skinny Monkey and the others.

Learning that Wang Zhendong was one of their own, Skinny Monkey didn't say anything more.

Before long, Wang Zhendong hurried out from inside.

He had already taken off his waiter uniform and changed into a tattered set of old clothes.

Stepping out of the restaurant, he rubbed his hands together against the cold while anxiously searching around.

Chen Xuewen called out to him, and Wang Zhendong quickly ran over.

"Brother Wen, I've resigned."

"From now on, I'm following your lead!"

Wang Zhendong said excitedly.

Chen Xuewen laughed. "We're all just trying to make a living out here!"

"Don't worry. Since you're with me, as long as I have a bite to eat, I'll never let you go hungry!"

Wang Zhendong was overjoyed and thanked him repeatedly.

Chen Xuewen took the opportunity to introduce the people around him to Wang Zhendong.

When it came to Skinny Monkey, Wang Zhendong shook his hand while awkwardly saying, "Brother Monkey, I'm really sorry about what happened just now."

"Your brother here didn't know you were one of our own. Please be the bigger man and don't hold a grudge for the offense!"

These words instantly washed away any lingering anger in Skinny Monkey's heart.

He smiled, patted Wang Zhendong on the shoulder, and laughed, "Dongzi, we're all brothers from now on. No need to be so polite."

"Isn't there a good saying? Friends are made through fights."

"Look, if it weren't for this incident today, we brothers probably wouldn't have crossed paths!"

Wang Zhendong broke into a wide smile.
