Chapter 22: Duan Lele Is Expelled from the Show
Duan Lele did not feel that there was anything wrong with her outfit at all. As a celebrity, she believed she had to be mindful of her demeanor and appearance at every moment, ensuring no one could find a single fault with her.
When asked, she looked puzzled. "Director, I know I'm here to work in the fields, but no one ever said you couldn't dress like this while doing it."
Her words did not win the audience's favor; instead, they made her even more detestable.
[Ugh! I am so sick of Duan Lele. She’s putting on a show and won’t even admit it, and then she has the audacity to say something like that.]
[As someone who actually works in the fields, I can say for certain that her entire look is just for show.]
[If she actually worked in the fields wearing that, it would be a miracle if she didn't fall and break her neck.]
Duan Lele’s fanbase shrank significantly, and her reputation among the general public plummeted, though she remained oblivious to it all. Ignoring the director’s glare, she teetered on her thin stiletto heels toward Feng Doudou.
But—
"Ah!" She stumbled and fell to the ground, nearly suffering a wardrobe malfunction.
Feng Doudou reached out to help her, but was stopped by her friends.
"Don't. The mud in these fields is soft; it’s no wonder she fell wearing high heels."
"And dressing like that? That’s not how you work in the fields. No one in our village dresses like that to work; only internet influencers filming livestreams do."
Feng Doudou felt anxious and uneasy. She was afraid that if she didn't help Duan Lele, the woman would go back to bullying her in private, leaving her with no way to voice her grievances.
"I... I think I should still help her up."
She trotted over to Duan Lele and offered her hand. "Sister, let me help you up."
She was shoved away by Duan Lele, who retorted with disdain, "Don't touch me with your dirty hands!"
"My outfit is limited edition; you couldn't afford to pay for it if you ruined it."
Feng Doudou’s hands were stained with a bit of dirt, but they weren't particularly filthy. Hearing this, she retreated to the side, pouting and trying to hold back tears.
"You are truly disgusting." Yu Danxue walked over and pulled Feng Doudou behind her, shielding her.
She looked at Duan Lele with indignation. "Doudou was kind enough to help you, and yet you say such things."
"If your clothes are so expensive, you shouldn't have worn them out here. You knew you were coming to the fields, so dressing like this—isn't it obvious you just didn't want to work?"
Zhisheng had just explained to her that "limited edition" meant something was very expensive. Back in her hometown, rare clothes were reserved for important occasions and never worn for daily chores.
"I..." Duan Lele started to speak, but was cut off by the director.
"Duan Lele, I have already spoken to your agent. You are fired from the program."
"My show is too humble to house a 'great Buddha' like you. Please, get out immediately."
He was thoroughly fed up with people like Duan Lele, who couldn't even bother to put up a decent facade. She had likely been pampered too much by her fans and sponsors.
"Director!" Duan Lele panicked, no longer caring about her resentment toward Yu Danxue. "I'll go change my clothes right now! I promise I’ll be obedient for the rest of the show."
Her agent had told her that if she lost this show, the company would freeze her career. She had struggled so hard to reach her current position and was just on the verge of marrying Zhisheng—there was no way she could let her career be shelved.
The director wouldn't even spare her a glance, ordering the staff to escort her away.
[So satisfying. I feel so much better now.]
[Now if only Gao Pengfei would leave the show, too. I’m sick of looking at him.]
[I hope the replacement guest is decent and doesn't cause trouble. I just want to see the little ones happy.]
"Doudou, don't be afraid." Yu Danxue held Feng Doudou’s hand, comforting her like a little elder. "I will protect you. No one will ever hurt you again."
Feng Doudou burst into tears. "Anning, she used to target me in private, saying horrible things and threatening that if I didn't listen to her, she would have her fans cyberbully my family."
"The days I spent with her, I couldn't even eat enough. I had to do whatever she ordered, and if I couldn't, she would scold me."
"I was so scared."
Yu Danxue was stunned. "She is so wicked!"
She puffed out her cheeks in anger. "A person like that is actually a celebrity? How disgusting."
[Oh my god! Duan Lele is 'beautiful and kind'? She’s more like a venomous snake!]
[I knew there was a reason Feng Doudou looked like that whenever she was on camera. It was all because of that wretch Duan Lele.]
[I suggest we ban Duan Lele and stop her from harming anyone else.]
[Nonsense! Our idol would never do such things. This little brat is framing her because she wants to leech off our idol's fame.]
[Our idol is famous for being kind-hearted; she helps so many people. It’s impossible for her to do something like this.]
[You little brat, just you wait. I’m going to doxx your whole family right now and make sure you all suffer!]
[Reported. Called the police.]
[Duan Lele’s fans are terrifying. Truly, like star, like fan.]
Duan Lele’s fans' accounts were all banned, and even when they registered new ones, they were quickly shut down. Those who had been shouting about doxxing the Feng family were all taken to the police station.
Feng Doudou, unaware of this, continued to cry in Yu Danxue’s arms. "I regret coming to this show."
"My parents thought it would be fun for me, but who knew I’d run into someone like that."
She had heard that Duan Lele was nice and thought the recording would be easy, but it turned out to be the opposite.
"It’s okay," Yu Danxue said. "Doudou, we are here for you. If something happens, just tell us, and we will help you solve it."
"If we can't solve it, we’ll ask the police officers for help."
This was what Zhisheng had told her—if you encounter a problem you can't solve, and even your family can't help, you go to the police. Zhisheng had also said the police were like the local magistrates.
Feng Doudou felt much better and stopped crying. "Anning, do you think the replacement guest will be a good person?"
Yu Danxue wasn't sure. "If they aren't, I’ll trade places with you."
"Zhisheng is a good kid; he can take care of you."
Feng Doudou looked at her with gratitude. "Anning, you are so kind."
Yu Danxue replied, "I am an elder, after all. I should take care of you all."
Yu Zhisheng, "..."
The "little grand-aunt" never asked for his opinion, but then again, he was the junior.
With the matter resolved, Yu Danxue and the others continued to harvest the vegetables. Through their collective effort, the vegetables in all four plots were picked.
Once finished, they had to deliver the vegetables to the owners. But there was a problem: they had no baskets or bags. How were they supposed to transport them?
The camera gave the director a close-up, capturing his smug expression.
[Confirmed. The director did this on purpose.]
[So, this is where the director was waiting to trip up the guests.]
[I have a feeling the director is heading for another Waterloo.]
