Chapter 7: Arriving at the Troops

After the two were taken away, the enthusiastic bystander who had just been persuading Fu Xiaoxiao hurriedly covered her face and stepped back. The more she had pleaded, the more her face now ached. Fu Xiaoxiao cast a calm glance at the crowd, then took her lunchbox and returned to her spot to sit down.
“Are you alright?” Lu Feng looked at Fu Xiaoxiao softly.
“Alright? What could be wrong with me? Come sit and eat quickly, the food’s getting cold,” Fu Xiaoxiao said brightly, inviting Lu Feng to sit down and pushing the opened lunchbox toward him.
Lu Feng hesitated, then pushed the lunchbox back to Fu Xiaoxiao.
“This braised pork is for you.”
“You eat the braised pork, I’ll have the tomato scrambled eggs,” Fu Xiaoxiao smiled and pushed the meat dish toward Lu Feng.
Lu Feng pushed the meat dish back to Fu Xiaoxiao and reached out for the vegetarian one.
Fu Xiaoxiao looked up helplessly. If she kept being so polite, the meal would really get cold. She grabbed Lu Feng’s hand, placed the two lunchboxes together, and picked a little from each dish.
“How about this? Meat and vegetables both,” Fu Xiaoxiao said with a gentle smile.
She had been looking forward to the taste of the lunchbox, but the greasy braised pork made her frown the moment it touched her tongue.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Feng noticed the change in her expression and asked.
Fu Xiaoxiao was struggling to swallow the braised pork. Just as she was troubled, Lu Feng’s lunchbox was pushed toward her.
Startled, Fu Xiaoxiao saw Lu Feng signaling her to put the braised pork into his lunchbox.
“This piece… I’ve already bitten it,” she said awkwardly, not wanting to give him something she’d already eaten, and instead handed over the few remaining pieces in her box.
Lu Feng swept through the lunchbox and finished it all.
Fu Xiaoxiao had eaten half, but her long-starved stomach had reached its limit.
Without a word, Lu Feng took her lunchbox.
“Sorry,” Fu Xiaoxiao lowered her head in shame, letting Lu Feng finish her leftovers.
In this era, food was precious, and wasting it was shameful.
“Don’t apologize to me. You’re my wife; taking care of you is my duty,” Lu Feng said without a hint of complaint. If anything, he felt indebted to her for not being able to give her a complete life.
Lu Feng carried the empty lunchbox away. Watching his back, Fu Xiaoxiao felt a small flicker of emotion.

This boss is really kind! Once we reach our destination, I’ll work hard for him, never letting him worry about the family, so he can have peace of mind.
Having filled her stomach, Fu Xiaoxiao dozed off. When Lu Feng gently shook her awake, they had arrived at their destination.
After a whole day on the train, Fu Xiaoxiao was grateful Lu Feng had bought sleeper tickets; the hard seats would have been unbearable.
Lu Feng led the way with luggage, Fu Xiaoxiao followed closely, disembarking with the crowd.
“Captain Lu! Over here! Over here!” A soldier in the crowd waved frantically. Lu Feng heard and brought Fu Xiaoxiao to the soldier.
“Hello, sister-in-law, I’m Wang Lu, but you can just call me Xiao Lu,” the soldier’s eyes lit up when he saw Fu Xiaoxiao behind Lu Feng and saluted her.
“Hello, Xiao Lu, I’m Fu Xiaoxiao,” she smiled and nodded in greeting.
Wang Lu took the luggage from Lu Feng and led them to the car.
“Let’s get going! The division commander is waiting for you!”
Fu Xiaoxiao sat in the back seat with Lu Feng. Wang Lu drove fast, jolting her several times.
Curious, Fu Xiaoxiao glanced at Lu Feng, who sat upright and steady as ever.
“Ah!” The car hit a small bump, and unprepared, Fu Xiaoxiao was jolted upward, nearly crashing into the door.
“Careful,” Lu Feng caught her and pulled her close. She fell into his arms, feeling as if her face had hit a wall, the pain bringing tears to her eyes.
Looking up, her gaze met Lu Feng’s chest, and she pressed her hand to her nose.
Solid.
Lu Feng cast a quick, unreadable glance at her mischievous hand.
Fu Xiaoxiao hurriedly sat up straight and rubbed her nose.
“Drive more steadily,” Lu Feng’s dark eyes flicked toward Wang Lu.
“Sorry, sister-in-law,” Wang Lu felt a chill down his back and quickly slowed the car.
—He used to wish Lu Feng would floor the accelerator, but now he was told to drive gently. Clearly, having a wife made him more considerate.
Fu Xiaoxiao watched the scenery outside. The road grew more remote. After an hour, they finally arrived at the military base.
The moment she stepped off the car, she drew attention. Soldiers training nearby who saw Fu Xiaoxiao beside Lu Feng stared in disbelief.
Their fierce captain had actually brought home a woman — and such a beautiful one at that.
In their lifetime, they never expected to see the eternal iron tree finally bloom.

“Everyone’s too idle, huh? Extra training for one hour,” Lu Feng’s cold eyes swept over them with icy sharpness.
“Ah~” The soldiers’ faces drained as they let out wails of despair.
“Let’s go!” Facing Fu Xiaoxiao, Lu Feng’s harshness softened. He picked up the luggage and headed toward the family quarters.
Upon arrival, Fu Xiaoxiao and Lu Feng’s appearance attracted many glances. She sensed a strong undercurrent of gossip; the other wives’ eyes held a mix of curiosity and sympathy.
Curiosity was one thing, but sympathy?
“Captain Lu, who is this?” A few curious older wives sitting at the entrance boldly asked.
“This is my wife, Fu Xiaoxiao,” Lu Feng nodded to them, introducing her.
“Hello, aunts,” Fu Xiaoxiao smiled politely.
“Well, that’s good news. Finally, someone to look after your two kids.”
“Yeah, those two are never home, and Captain Lu’s busy too. Tsk, tsk.”
“Little Fu, you must discipline them well.”
The older wives took turns giving advice.
Fu Xiaoxiao smiled faintly, saying nothing.
She wouldn’t judge the two children until she had met them in person.
Lu Feng carried the luggage inside. Fu Xiaoxiao nodded politely to the older wives, then followed him into the courtyard.
“Oh my, Captain Lu, you’re finally back. If you hadn’t come soon, the whole sky might have fallen. Your two little monkeys, I can’t stand it anymore. Look at the mischief they’ve caused—catching bugs to scare this old lady here.”
As Fu Xiaoxiao entered, she saw an elderly woman complaining to Lu Feng. The ground was a mess, clearly the aftermath of a battle.
“Aunt Li, I’m really sorry to trouble you again. Don’t worry, I’ll double your pay for today,” Lu Feng sighed helplessly, preparing compensation.
A flash of pride and disdain crossed Aunt Li’s eyes. Fu Xiaoxiao stepped forward and stopped Lu Feng’s hand.
“Please tell me exactly what these two did today. I want to know,” Fu Xiaoxiao said, smiling in a way that left no room for refusal.
Lu Feng was momentarily taken aback, not fully understanding her intention, but he respected her wishes and gestured for Aunt Li to explain in detail.
“Haven’t I already said? I gave those two a scolding this morning, and they ran out the door, came back with a bunch of bugs to scare this old lady…” Aunt Li spun her familiar tale skillfully.
