Chu Xian felt thoroughly uncomfortable.

When he saw Fu Yun’s gaze sweep over everyone before settling on his younger sister, Chu Mian, he immediately pulled her behind him and met Fu Yun’s eyes.

“So you’re the young master of the Fu family—the son of Fu Xing?”

Fu Yun took out a handkerchief and wiped the mud from Xie Anyue’s hand before pulling her into his arms.

“Anyue, my darling, don’t cry. Seeing you cry breaks my heart.”

“Mhm~”

Xie Anyue was so moved that her eyes turned red.

The two of them fawned over each other shamelessly, completely ignoring Chu Xian’s words. Their attitude was arrogant and condescending.

After comforting Xie Anyue, Fu Yun finally answered Chu Xian.

“That’s right. You must be Chu Mian’s country brother, then. As it happens, Chu Mian stole the engagement ring I gave Anyue. Hand it over at once!”

“Don’t make wild accusations without evidence,” Chu Xian snapped angrily.

This was his first time dealing with the young master of the Fu family, but he had never imagined that the man’s temperament could be so vastly inferior to that of his father, Fu Xing.

Fortunately, he had brought his sister back from the Xie family before she married.

Otherwise, if she had married someone like Fu Yun, wouldn’t she have spent her entire life in tears?

“You!”

Fu Yun had not expected Chu Xian to be so uncivilized. Frowning, he turned his gaze toward Chu Mian—and froze.

She was... quite beautiful.

“Brother Yun?”

Noticing Fu Yun staring at Chu Mian, Xie Anyue immediately grew anxious and tightened her grip on his sleeve.

Fu Yun came back to himself.

So what if Chu Mian was beautiful?

The Chu family was so shabby, and Chu Mian had merely been born to some rustic countrywoman. This place was filthy; for all he knew, the blood running through the veins of the entire family was dirty as well.

Anyue, on the other hand, came from the prestigious Xie family. Although the Xie family could not compare with the Fu family, she was still a refined young lady of status.

Compared with Anyue, he would still choose Anyue.

As this thought crossed his mind, Fu Yun’s gaze toward Chu Mian became lecherous.

“So you’re Chu Mian?”

When she failed to answer, Fu Yun disliked her even more.

Just as he had expected of a country bumpkin—she had no manners at all!

He lifted his chin arrogantly.

“I have no feelings for you whatsoever. The woman I love is Anyue, the Xie family’s heiress. You, meanwhile, occupied her identity as a wealthy heiress and lived in luxury for more than a decade, but deep down you’re still an embarrassing lowborn. Our engagement is terminated, and we have nothing more to do with each other. So hurry up and return Anyue’s ring to her! Your family is obviously short of money. I can give you a generous compensation for breaking off the engagement...”

“Fu Yun.”

Fu Jinnian suddenly spoke, his deep voice carrying a hint of authority.

At the sound of it, fear surged through Fu Yun’s veins.

He looked around in bewilderment.

What in the world? Why had he heard his uncle’s voice?

He knew that voice far too well...

After scanning the room, Fu Yun finally noticed Fu Jinnian sitting behind Chu Mian and the others.

The next second, his expression stiffened. His eyes widened in astonishment, and he stared blankly before stammering, “U-Uncle? What are you doing here?”

“If I weren’t here, how would I know that you were disgracing the Fu family outside?”

Fu Jinnian slowly maneuvered his wheelchair toward Fu Yun.

The intensity of his gaze made gooseflesh rise all over Fu Yun’s body.

Seeing the arrogance drain from Fu Yun in an instant, Xie Anyue was bewildered. But when she heard him call the cripple in front of her “Uncle,” she finally understood why he had reacted like a mouse seeing a cat.

He was Fu Yun’s uncle?

Then that meant he was the head of the Fu family—the biological brother of Fu Xing?

When she had investigated the Fu family, Xie Anyue had looked into everyone’s background. Fu Yun’s parents were both businesspeople who controlled the entire Fu Corporation. Fu Yun was Fu Xing’s only son and the heir to the Fu family.

She had also learned that Fu Xing had a younger brother, the son of Madam Min Xiangyu and the late Master Fu. His name was Fu Jinnian, though he was commonly known as the Second Master of the Fu family.

Fu Jinnian had been born many years after his parents’ marriage. As a result, he was more than a decade—perhaps nearly two decades—younger than Fu Xing, and only five or six years older than Fu Yun.

So the cripple she had just insulted and belittled was actually her future... uncle-in-law?

Xie Anyue was so shocked that she broke out in a cold sweat. She did not even dare look at Fu Jinnian now.

But why was Fu Jinnian here?

“Uncle, this is my girlfriend, Anyue. Anyue, say hello.”

Desperate to change the subject and salvage the situation, Fu Yun pushed Xie Anyue forward.

Xie Anyue clenched her teeth anxiously, but she was already standing in front of Fu Jinnian and had no choice but to force herself to speak.

“Uncle...”

“I’m afraid I can’t accept being addressed as ‘Uncle’ by Miss Xie,” Fu Jinnian said, his eyes cold and dark. “After all, how could a cripple like me, someone who cannot even produce fifty million, possibly have any connection to the heiress of the Xie family?”

Xie Anyue nearly burst into tears.

She had not even entered the Fu family yet, and she had already offended one of its elders. At that moment, she wished she could find a hole and crawl into it.

Fu Yun did not know what Xie Anyue had said earlier, but seeing his uncle deliberately target his girlfriend made him somewhat angry.

Yet with the overwhelming authority of Fu Jinnian’s bloodline bearing down on him, he did not dare say anything.

Instead, he explained according to his own assumptions.

“Uncle, Anyue has never met you before and didn’t know who you were. She came here today only to retrieve the ring Chu Mian stole. She wasn’t deliberately being disrespectful to you. I apologize to you on her behalf.”

With that, Fu Yun bent forward in a perfect ninety-degree bow, his attitude utterly sincere. There was no trace left of his earlier arrogance and superior air.

“Stole?”

Fu Jinnian gave a cold laugh, then suddenly turned toward Chu Mian. His voice softened.

“Miss Chu is my fiancée—your future aunt-in-law.”

The words exploded like a thunderclap.

Before anyone could react, Fu Jinnian looked coldly at Fu Yun.

“Do you think I can’t afford to give her a ring? Or do you think she would be interested in your worthless piece of trash?”

“F-Future aunt-in-law?!”

Fu Yun had already been shocked countless times that day.

But learning that Chu Mian—the woman whose engagement he had just broken off—had suddenly become his uncle’s fiancée was the most earth-shattering revelation of all.

Xie Anyue was equally stunned.

She abruptly raised her head and looked at Chu Mian, whose expression remained perfectly calm.

How could Chu Mian possibly be Fu Jinnian’s fiancée?

If she truly became his wife, wouldn’t Chu Mian be above her forever? Would she then have to respectfully call Chu Mian... Aunt-in-law?

That would be even more unbearable than death!

“Ah, yes!” Fu Yun was the first to recover. He nodded with an awkward laugh. “Uncle is right. It’s just a worthless trinket. There’s no way Aunt-in-law would be interested in it.”

At that, Xie Anyue grew furious once again.

She gritted her teeth, her hands clenched into fists.

A worthless trinket?

The ring she treasured had been dismissed as trash in just a few casual words!

Chu Mian, who should have been kneeling and begging for mercy today, had suddenly risen to a position far above her...

“So, do you still believe Miss Chu would have taken that ring?”

Under Fu Jinnian’s intimidating gaze, Fu Yun could only shake his head repeatedly.

“No, no! Aunt-in-law definitely wouldn’t want it!”

Those words struck another blow to Xie Anyue’s heart.

She was seething with rage, but when she suddenly met Fu Jinnian’s dark eyes, every hair on her body stood on end. Gritting her teeth, she shook her head.

“Uncle is right. Perhaps the ring fell into some corner of my house and I simply couldn’t find it. I misunderstood my sister.”

She could not bring herself to say “Aunt-in-law.”

“Do you think an apology for a misunderstanding is enough?” Fu Jinnian asked. “Apologize properly.”
