Chapter 22: Don't you think there's something wrong?
Jiang Muyu thoughtfully followed Ren Liuguang, knowing full well that he would eventually come back to her. When that time came, the price she would charge him for a reading would be entirely up to her.
"We don't need to worry about that person; his retribution is still to come. Now, is 'AAA Renovation Brother Liu,' the winner of our giveaway, still in the stream? I can do your reading now."
—[Why wasn't I the winner? I'm quite curious to see what she can figure out...]
—[Brother Liu, are you there? There are so many people in the stream waiting for you.]
—[Brother Liu, my house hasn't been renovated yet. We're all friends here, can you give me a discount?]
—[Is Brother Liu intentionally staying quiet? Waiting for us to advertise for him?]
—[Good grief, not only did he get a free reading, but he's also getting free advertising in the livestream. That's incredible.]
—[Calling Brother Liu to the stage!]
AAA Renovation Brother Liu: [I'm here, host. I've sent a request to go live with you.]
Soon, Jiang Muyu received his connection request and clicked accept. A moment later, his image appeared on the other side of the screen. He was a man in his thirties, wearing work clothes stained with unwashed grime, looking every bit the part of a renovation worker.
"Brother Liu! Congratulations again on winning the reading opportunity in our stream, worth one Carnival! What would you like me to read for you?"
Jiang Muyu observed his features—he had a square, honest face and appeared to be a decent man without malicious intent. Based on his physiognomy, his family life seemed quite happy. However, since he had found his way to her stream, Jiang Muyu treated him as a fated visitor. If he didn't know what to ask, she would check if there were any impending disasters in his life.
—[Ask when you're going to get rich!]
—[Looking at the situation, the brother must still be at the construction site, right? It's so hot; that's hard work.]
—[Why do some people keep talking about getting rich? Have you forgotten what happened to those two college students earlier? Still talking about getting rich?]
—[Brother, why don't you sell this connection spot to me? I'm willing to pay two thousand yuan.]
Seeing that Brother Liu didn't speak for a moment, Jiang Muyu assumed he really had nothing specific to ask. Just as she was about to say something, Brother Liu finally spoke.
"Uh, host... you really have genuine skills, right?"
Jiang Muyu raised an eyebrow slightly. "Brother Liu, since you've come to my stream, you must have watched my broadcasts. Feel free to speak your mind. Even if I can't solve it, we have everyone here in the stream, don't we?"
—[Don't drag me into this; I'm just here to watch the show.]
—[Actually, I'm quite an expert on eating and sleeping. Brother, if you need help with that, I'm your guy.]
Brother Liu seemed to think it over seriously before nodding. "Host, it's like this. I want you to help me take a look at this place."
The camera shook, and Jiang Muyu felt a bit dizzy as the perspective shifted. Fortunately, the movement soon stabilized. It was clear that Brother Liu was taking them into a building, up the stairs, and finally stopping in front of a door.
"Host, this is the house we're supposed to renovate over the next two days. Actually, no one has moved into this complex yet; these are all raw, unfinished units. But something is quite strange..."
As he spoke, Brother Liu pushed the door open, moved his phone forward, and panned the room. It was completely empty. However, he quickly backed out.
"Host, it's that room. When we went in this morning, something felt wrong. It was very cold, and there was a foul odor. Has something happened here before...?"
In truth, Brother Liu and his crew had seen plenty of strange things in their line of work, but they had never felt as uncomfortable as they did in this room. When they first entered, they noticed the temperature was off, and there was an elusive, foul smell they couldn't trace. Furthermore, while they were packing up their tools, they kept hearing odd noises. One thing on its own might not have been much, but with all these coincidences piling up, even these hardened men were starting to get scared.
They had reported it to their boss, but he wouldn't allow them to call the police, telling them not to overthink it and just get the work done. They had discussed it and decided to leave that room for last. By chance, while taking a break, they stumbled upon Jiang Muyu's stream and joined the giveaway, never expecting to win. Since they had this opportunity, they figured they might as well let her check if there was something fishy about the place. If there was nothing wrong, they could work in peace.
"...Host, that's the situation with the house. I just showed it to you. Could you please tell us if there's anything 'unclean' here?"
—[How could there be so many unclean things in the world? Brother, don't scare yourselves.]
—[Isn't this just an unfinished room? If something had happened, there would surely be traces, but there aren't any.]
—[Maybe the window was left open, causing the temperature difference.]
—[If you put it that way, maybe the sounds were just coming from one of the workers' phones...]
—[How do you explain the smell? I think there's something weird about this house. Sometimes human intuition is very accurate.]
—[I read in the news that some low-quality building materials can emit foul odors.]
—[But the other rooms don't smell. Only this one? I still think something's wrong.]
Before Jiang Muyu could speak, the audience in the stream was already arguing. Some felt something was off, while others thought Brother Liu was overthinking it.
Brother Liu felt his skin crawl and asked again, "Host, did you see clearly? If not, I can go back in and show you again."
He grabbed the door handle, intending to step inside once more, but Jiang Muyu stopped him.
"No need, I've seen it very clearly."
"Then... is there really something unclean in there?" Brother Liu asked.
Jiang Muyu was silent for a moment, then pulled out her phone and started making a call. "Not necessarily something 'unclean'."
The call was answered quickly. A man's voice came through: "Hello?"
Jiang Muyu's voice sounded rather cheerful. "Hello~ it's me, Officer Tao! Officer Tao, are you busy?"
The person on the other end was silent for a moment before asking, "Jiang Muyu? Why are you calling at this hour? Have you decided what you want to confess?"
"I have nothing to confess, but I have an opportunity for you to earn a commendation. Do you want it?"
