Chapter 55 Seeing a Ghost
Night Moon directly sliced open a wound on her hand with her fingernail. Fresh blood welled up, condensing into a thin layer of blood armor across her skin that wrapped around her entire body.
The blood armor was as dazzling and brilliant as a ruby, leaving not a single patch of skin exposed. At this moment, Night Moon looked like a valkyrie stepping down from a battlefield, radiating overwhelming momentum.
Ren Jie wore a dark expression.
(̿▀̿ ̿Ĺ̯̿̿▀̿ ̿)̄ "Aren't you just bullying an honest man here?"
Wrapped up this tightly? How was he supposed to find an opening to strike?
Night Moon gave a light smile. "Don't worry, I'll pull my punches. Let me test what you're really made of."
Ren Jie replied, "141 jin and 6 liang. No need to test, I'm just telling you directly, aren't I?"
Night Moon: ???
"Such a slick tongue!"
She charged straight at him. Forced into a corner with no other choice, Ren Jie had to bite the bullet and engage.
Night Moon's movements were simply too fast. Even with his Flash Eye active, Ren Jie could barely keep up, and she immediately pressed the advantage, beating him mercilessly.
As a rookie in hand-to-hand combat who only knew cheap tricks, how could he possibly withstand this? He was being pounded into an absolute pulp.
Yet Night Moon was indeed holding back, only hitting him hard enough to cause pain. Otherwise, given her strength, if she had been serious, Ren Jie probably would have been taken out in a single second.
At first, Wu Yunqing and Ye Huai were quite amused. This kid was finally getting what was coming to him—what a satisfying sight.
Before long, however, the amusement vanished from their faces, because Ren Jie's combat techniques were growing at an astonishing rate.
Every move he used was one that Night Moon had just demonstrated. At first, they were a bit clumsy, but they rapidly became practiced and standard.
He was perfectly replicating Night Moon's combat techniques, even down to the ways she exerted and released force.
Yun筱 and the others were utterly shocked. It was their first time witnessing someone with such a terrifying learning ability.
Worse still, he was learning right in the middle of combat and immediately putting what he learned into practice.
It was utterly absurd!
And this was the terrifying power of the Flash Eye. Not only could it slow down time, but it also deeply engraved the sights into his mind, granting him a photographic memory.
All Ren Jie had to do was imitate. It was equivalent to having a ready-made instructional video playing in slow motion over and over in his head. If he still couldn't learn it after that, he might as well just quit living.
Gradually, Ren Jie was actually able to exchange blows with Night Moon.
Night Moon was profoundly shaken as well. This guy truly was a genius; what kind of terrifying learning capability was this?
Furthermore, she was astonished to discover that although Ren Jie was only at the first-tier eighth stage, his physical fitness was exceptionally outstanding—far surpassing others of the same tier, almost double theirs.
And this was still without activating his demonic transformation.
How many days had this kid even been awakened? Just how had he been training?
Realizing that Ren Jie had adapted quickly, Night Moon began feeding him moves to practice, getting so absorbed in the training that she completely lost track of time.
During this period, Ren Jie tried to slack off multiple times, claiming he couldn't go on, that his physical stamina was exhausted, and that his body was bruised all over—how could he possibly keep training?
Yet all it took was for Yun筱 to cast a single recovery spell, and Ren Jie was instantly restored to peak condition, making it impossible for him to lazily opt out.
Only then did Ren Jie understand Yun筱's role in the training room. These people were planning to train him until he was practically crippled!
They fought continuously from morning until evening, until Ren Jie finally collapsed facedown on the floor and refused to get back up no matter what.
Even Night Moon was somewhat exhausted, and since the schedule she had arranged was mostly complete, she said, "Leaf~ Go take him to practice shooting. Let him rest a bit, and then bring him back to continue..."
Ren Jie: ???
You call this a rest?
Ye Huai's eyes lit up brightly. *Step aside everyone, it's time for me to show off.*
With that, he dragged Ren Jie over to the shooting range inside the training room.
He tossed a Glock pistol over to Ren Jie.
"You don't need me to teach you how to take off the safety, do you?"
"Eye, rear sight, target—three points in a straight line, then pull the trigger!"
With practiced ease, Ye Huai drew his weapon and fired. The sound of "bang, bang, bang" echoed as he instantly emptied the magazine, every single bullet hole clustering evenly around the bullseye of the ten-ring target.
He then raised an eyebrow smugly at Ren Jie.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)✧ "Punk, take notes~"
Ren Jie tilted his head. "You've got to be kidding me? What year is it? Are conventional weapons still useful? Can this thing actually kill demons?"
Ye Huai rolled his eyes.
"Duh! Ordinary bullets certainly can't, but there are plenty of special types: demon-suppressing bullets, armor-piercing rounds, explosive rounds, venom bullets—there's always one that fits the job..."
"Besides, sometimes the danger doesn't come from demons, but from the humans around you... Understand? Just learn what you're told!"
Ren Jie curled his lips in disdain. Mimicking Ye Huai's posture from moments ago, he raised the gun, activated his Flash Eye, and pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
Amidst the flash of gunfire, the first bullet struck outside the rings, on the upper left side of the target paper.
Ye Huai chuckled. ((´థ ꇴ థ)σ "Ha~ Oh boy, talk about wide of the mark! But don't get discouraged; for your first time shooting, not missing the paper entirely is pretty good. You actually have some talent."
"Bang!"
The second shot rang out, striking the lower left side of the target paper, perfectly aligned with the previous hole.
Ye Huai clicked his tongue. (¬皿¬) "Tsk tsk tsk~ Was that shot a lucky guess? Try aiming a bit more to the right~"
"Bang, bang, bang, bang..."
A rapid series of gunshots rang out. The black dot at the center of the ten-ring target was directly blown away, and every subsequent bullet accurately struck the hole in the bullseye.
By the time the magazine was emptied, there were only three bullet holes on the entire target paper.
Ye Huai's expression froze, and he stood rooted to the spot in utter foolishness.
Ren Jie pressed a button, and the target paper was automatically reeled over.
He tore the target paper from the clip and placed it directly onto a bound pad of target sheets sitting nearby.
The two holes on the left side happened to thread perfectly through the two binding rings on the left side of the target pad.
Ren Jie raised an eyebrow. (๑◔ٹٹ◔ิ) "Anything else you want to teach me?"
Ye Huai's face darkened. "Sis... nothing left. Where on earth did you learn marksmanship?"
Ren Jie walked out of the shooting range without looking back.
"CrossFire on the cargo ship! Want to snipe? My quick-scoping is top-tier!"
Ye Huai: ???
My foot!
Since when is quick-scoping in a video game the same as in real life?
Who are you trying to fool?
What on earth is this kid's background?
Was he a legendary military king reincarnated?
In truth, for someone like Ren Jie who possessed the Flash Eye, this task was beyond simple.
"I'm going to the restroom, I'll be right back~"
A distracted Ye Huai returned to the training room, where Night Moon was drinking water and looked bewildered.
"Weren't you taking him to practice marksmanship? Why are you back so soon?"
Ye Huai said, utterly disheartened, (◞‸◟ ) "There's nothing left for me to teach him. He could teach my master..."
Night Moon: (๑•̌ࡇ•̑) Huh⁉️
Meanwhile, Ren Jie, having bolted out of the training room, went straight into full sprint mode and headed directly for the elevators.
The hallway was completely empty. Everyone had already knocked off work—who on earth would still be training?
My foot!
If he didn't run now, those beasts would train him right through the night.
Stepping into the elevator, Ren Jie pressed the top-floor button and charged out the moment the doors opened.
However, after running just a few steps, he spotted the sign for the "Try and Die Room."
What the hell?
He was clearly on the top floor now; why was he still back on this same level?
Ah, so that was it!
Were these people pulling tricks with the elevator just to keep training him?
If the elevator was broken, he would just take the stairs.
Ren Jie made a bee-line for the stairwell and began scrambling upward at full speed.
First floor, third floor, thirtieth floor...
Ren Jie climbed until his legs felt like jelly, panting heavily from exhaustion.
*Damn it, are they serious? Just how deep did they dig underground?*
*I remember starting on sub-level 17. After climbing for this long, why haven't I gotten out yet?*
Ren Jie climbed yet another flight, looked up, and glanced casually at the stairwell landing.
He froze in place. The metal plaque above clearly displayed "Sub-17."
Ren Jie's eyes widened. He swallowed hard and hauled himself up another level.
That nightmare-inducing "Sub-17" sign was still posted right there at the stairwell entrance.
At that moment, the color drained entirely from Ren Jie's face.
What was going on? He had climbed thirty or forty floors, and he was still on sub-level 17?
Refusing to believe it, Ren Jie abandoned the stairs, sprinted back into the hallway, and charged straight toward the training room.
He kicked the heavy door open. "Are you people out of your minds? You won't even let me go home? What kind of dark sorcery did you use to lock this floor down?"
Night Moon and the others, who had been resting, were equally dumbfounded.
"Locked down? What are you talking about?"
Ren Jie rolled his eyes. "Acting? You're still acting?"
Without another word, he grabbed Night Moon by the arm, dragged her toward the stairwell, and began pulling her upward.
Night Moon looked completely bewildered. What was he playing at?
Meanwhile, Yun筱 and Ye Huai followed them out to the hallway to watch the commotion!
Ren Jie and Night Moon climbed up one floor. The moment they reached the landing, they ran right into Yun筱 and Ye Huai standing out in the corridor...
Night Moon's eyes widened in disbelief.
Ye Huai and Yun筱 were stunned as well, staring at the two of them with expressions of sheer terror.
Because just moments ago, they had clearly watched the two of them climb upward, yet after just a short while, they had watched the two of them come up from below.
This, this, this...
Ren Jie spread his hands. "See?"
Night Moon didn't speak. With a solemn expression, she turned and walked back down the stairs.
The very next moment, she emerged directly from the upper flight of stairs...
At that, the color drained completely from the faces of Yun筱 and Ye Huai, a trace of panic creeping into their eyes.
"This is seriously haunted!"
Night Moon's expression turned grave.
"I'm afraid we've run into a ghost wall!"
"Where are the others?"
Ren Jie said speechlessly, "Stop acting. It's so late, everyone else left work ages ago~"
Yun筱 shook her head repeatedly, a lingering terror in her eyes.
"How could they have left? The Demon Suppression Bureau runs on three shifts; there's always someone here 24 hours a day!"
The hallway was completely empty. On this floor—sub-level 17—there were only five of them left at this moment...
And not a single soul besides.
