Chapter 41: Changing Jobs
Luo Yun was being discharged from the hospital so quickly that it left Fang Zhiyan feeling a bit dazed about the passage of time.
Had it really been that long since he transmigrated here?
Xue Shan pushed open the door and led Fang Zhiyan inside with a smile on his face. "Boss, Director Tang, Miss Luo, Dr. Fang is here."
Upon entering, Fang Zhiyan was surprised to find the entire family of three in the hospital room. He quickly offered a formal and respectful greeting. The family before him, especially the head of the household, was the top official in Jiang'an City; he could not afford to be careless.
Luo Dongqiang nodded slightly. "My daughter is being discharged today. I came to pick her up and thought I’d take the chance to see you."
As he spoke, Luo Dongqiang frowned and reached up to press his temples. Xue Shan, noticing this, stepped forward immediately, only to be waved off by Luo Dongqiang.
"You saved my daughter, and I owe you a debt of gratitude," Luo continued.
Fang Zhiyan shook his head. "I understand, but Director Tang has already helped me enough."
Luo Dongqiang waved his hand dismissively. "That is her, and this is me." But no sooner had he finished the sentence than he frowned again, clutching his forehead.
"Dad!" Luo Yun called out from the side.
Xue Shan no longer hesitated and quickly pulled a small medicine box from his pocket. Fang Zhiyan glanced at it; it was Acetaminophen and Diphenhydramine tablets. This medication is primarily used to relieve mild to moderate pain accompanied by insomnia—in short, it is used to treat migraines. It is not a cure, but a painkiller; it takes thirty minutes to take effect, and the relief only lasts for three to four hours.
This time, Luo Dongqiang did not refuse. He quickly took a few pills and gave a bitter smile. "I’m getting old and useless. This headache just gets worse every day."
Fang Zhiyan looked at him and, with surprising boldness, spoke up. "Those tablets only provide pain relief, and they don't work immediately. Besides, Mr. Luo, you’ve been taking them for a long time, haven't you? Your body has developed a tolerance, which is why they are becoming less effective."
Luo Dongqiang nodded. It was no surprise that Fang Zhiyan, being a doctor, would know this.
"I have a set of massage techniques that can effectively alleviate migraines. Would you like to try them, Mr. Luo?"
Luo Dongqiang was taken aback, looking at Fang Zhiyan with some surprise. Tang Ya, standing nearby, chimed in, "Dr. Fang has such skills? Why not let him give it a try?"
Luo Dongqiang nodded, a faint smile appearing on his face. "Very well. Today, I shall experience Dr. Fang’s abilities for myself."
Fang Zhiyan didn't say anything more and walked quickly behind Luo Dongqiang. "A migraine is a chronic neurovascular disorder, generally characterized by episodic, moderate-to-severe throbbing headaches. My massage technique focuses primarily on five points: the Taiyang, Shangxing, Baihui, Fengchi, and Touwei points. If there is nausea or vomiting, I also press the Zhongwan point; if the headache is severe, I add the Neiguan point."
As he spoke, Fang Zhiyan raised his hands, using the heels of his palms to press firmly against the Taiyang points, kneading slowly about fifty times. He then used his fingertips to massage the Shangxing point one hundred times, the Baihui point one hundred times, the Fengchi point one hundred times, and the Touwei point fifty times.
He explained his actions as he went, mostly to teach Xue Shan, who was watching nearby. From the moment he began pressing the Taiyang points, Luo Dongqiang’s expression had clearly improved. Fang Zhiyan’s method was proving effective.
Tang Ya and Luo Yun watched from the side, their eyes filled with amazement. Luo Yun couldn't help but ask, "Dr. Fang, you’re also skilled in massage therapy?"
Fang Zhiyan smiled modestly. "My grandfather was an old village physician. I learned these techniques by watching him since I was a child."
Upon hearing this, Luo Dongqiang nodded gently. "I didn't expect you to come from a medical family, Zhiyan." His shift in address from "Dr. Fang" to "Zhiyan" already signaled a change in his attitude.
Luo Dongqiang didn't have any major health issues, but this migraine had troubled him for a long time. Today, Fang Zhiyan’s technique had truly surprised him. Soon, he spoke again, "The Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital is fine, but it ultimately cannot compare to the Jiang'an City People's Hospital. How about I have someone transfer you to the People's Hospital?"
Fang Zhiyan was startled. Jiang'an was an ordinary fourth-tier city, so the People's Hospital was only a Grade III-B facility. However, it was a comprehensive hospital, whereas the TCM hospital leaned more heavily toward traditional medicine. The emergency, thoracic surgery, and neurology departments there had only been established a few years ago. If he could transfer to the People's Hospital, Fang Zhiyan’s future would certainly be brighter.
But Fang Zhiyan didn't want to go. "Thank you, Mr. Luo, but I don't think that's necessary. I’ve interviewed at the People's Hospital before, and it seems I have no fate with them. On the contrary, Director He at the TCM hospital gave me a platform, so I will not be leaving."
Luo Dongqiang chuckled. "Very well. If you prefer to stay at the TCM hospital, then stay there. As for repaying you, let’s wait until you pass your medical licensing exam."
Hearing this, Luo Yun was still a bit incredulous. Fang Zhiyan didn't even have a medical license? Where, then, did he get all his clinical experience? It sounded like something out of a storyteller's book.
Fang Zhiyan finished the massage, and Luo Dongqiang’s headache had eased significantly. However, migraines still required rest and a regular schedule; massage and medicine alone were not enough.
Luo Yun completed the discharge procedures and left the hospital with reluctance. Just before leaving, she hopped over to stand in front of Fang Zhiyan. "Brother Zhiyan, I’m going back to school to finish my graduation thesis soon. When I’m gone, will you miss me?"
Fang Zhiyan was stunned, staring at her with suspicion. What kind of talk was that? What doctor misses their patient? Did she want to end up back in the hospital?
"I’d prefer not to miss you; I hope you finish your thesis in good health," Fang Zhiyan joked with a laugh.
Luo Yun looked speechless. "That’s not what I meant! Brother Zhiyan, do you have a girlfriend?" she asked again.
The sudden question left Fang Zhiyan feeling bewildered. What was this? Was everyone so concerned about his personal life lately? Still, facing her inquiry, he nodded. "I do."
A look of visible disappointment flashed across Luo Yun’s eyes. "Alright then. When you break up, remember to let me know."
Fang Zhiyan was stunned. Wait, was that appropriate? You aren't exactly wishing me well, are you?
Luo Yun left with lingering reluctance, and Fang Zhiyan never realized the young girl’s feelings of admiration and infatuation. He sat in his office, reviewing the question bank for the medical licensing exam. For him, it wasn't difficult, but reviewing old knowledge to gain new insights was a matter of attitude.
However, just as he was reading, his phone buzzed several times. He answered it with surprise, hearing a voice on the other end.
"Hello, is this Dr. Fang Zhiyan?"
"It is," Fang Zhiyan replied.
"Hello, Dr. Fang. We are calling from the Jiang'an City People's Hospital. Have you considered coming to our hospital to advance your career? We have a very generous incentive program for talented individuals."
