Chapter 61: What Do You Have to Fight Me?
It was currently evening. Fang Ziyan ran while keeping an eye out for taxis along the roadside.
Spotting one at long last, he quickly hailed it and headed straight for Xu Qiushuang’s residential compound.
Before long, standing downstairs at Xu Qiushuang’s building, Fang Ziyan called her once more.
On the other end of the line, Xu Qiushuang was sobbing uncontrollably. She insisted on coming downstairs to see Fang Ziyan.
However, her aunt, grandfather, and grandmother all tried to stop her.
Ultimately, after much insistence on her part, Xu Qiushuang was permitted to go downstairs.
Yet, accompanying her were her aunt, her uncle, and the very same cousin whom Fang Ziyan had recently rescued, Xu Qiuye.
Downstairs, Fang Ziyan looked at Xu Qiushuang in silence.
Her aunt, Xu Lanhua, strode right up to him. "You must be Fang Ziyan?"
"You want to be with our Qiushuang?"
"Have you looked in the mirror lately? Do you even have a place of your own? Can you afford the betrothal gift?"
"You have nothing at all—what gives you the right to hold back our Qiushuang?"
Fang Ziyan frowned as he looked at Xu Lanhua, failing to understand why there was such intense hostility.
"Teacher Xu, did you not want to discuss this with me at all?"
"Were you completely unwilling to wait for me even for a little while?"
"Clearly, you were the one who approached me first, and you were the one who wanted to start things between us. Yet behind my back, you went on a blind date?"
Xu Qiushuang lowered her head guiltily, murmuring, "I'm sorry, Ziyan. I'm sure you'll find someone much better."
At her side, Xu Lanhua chimed in directly, "Qiushuang, what is there for you to apologize for?"
"When people date, do they sign a contract or get a marriage certificate with the guy? Breaking up is just breaking up—what's all this fuss about?"
Hearing this, Fang Ziyan was so angry that he almost laughed.
Beside them, Xu Qiuye also let out a cold snort, staring straight at Fang Ziyan.
"What dating? Talk about shameless. It was nothing more than an ambiguous fling. Did you seriously mistake yourself for my sister's boyfriend?"
Fang Ziyan turned his head slightly to fix his gaze on Xu Qiuye.
Xu Qiuye sneered again. "What are you staring at?"
"Let me tell you, don't think that just because you saved my life, you deserve any special gratitude."
"You're a doctor, and I was a patient—that was just your job. It's not like I didn't pay you!"
Fang Ziyan gave a slight nod, his emotions tangled in extreme complexity.
He supposed he was just unlucky. His very first romance in this lifetime had ended so inexplicably.
And it had ended in such an utterly undignified manner.
To think he had previously turned down the blind date options introduced by his own mother.
He never expected that the Xu family played games like this.
Xu Qiushuang kept her head down, not daring to meet Fang Ziyan's eyes.
Right at that moment, her phone rang again.
Glancing down, Xu Qiushuang’s expression shifted slightly, and she immediately hung up.
Xu Lanhua, watching closely from the side, chimed in at once, "Oh, was that Xiao Gu calling?"
"Why did you hang up on him? You two are at a crucial stage of building your relationship; you should be talking more."
With that, Xu Lanhua turned her gaze back to Fang Ziyan.
"Don't think that just because you're a doctor, your profession is some kind of glorious badge of honor."
"Xiao Gu is a doctor too, and his family background is far better than yours. He didn't even blink when he handed over a hundred thousand for the betrothal gift. Not like you, reeking of poverty!"
Fang Ziyan took a deep breath and slowly raised his head.
The name "Xiao Gu" made him instantly sensitive.
"What is his full name?" Fang Ziyan asked.
Xu Qiushuang shook her head, putting on a pitiful expression. "I can't say."
Just as her voice trailed off, Xu Lanhua’s phone rang.
"Oh, Xiao Gu is calling me."
Smiling broadly, she answered the call and deliberately turned on the speakerphone.
The voice coming from the other end instantly sent a surge of boiling rage straight to Fang Ziyan's heart.
This Xiao Gu—wasn't it Gu Tao?
No wonder that bastard had been provoking him these past few days; it turned out he had been waiting right here for him all along!
Looking back at Xu Qiushuang and her pitiful act, it now looked utterly repulsive!
"So when you told me you were going to the movies with your cousin, you were actually going with Gu Tao?" Fang Ziyan asked coldly.
Xu Qiushuang didn't dare to answer; she merely gave a slight nod.
"Playing both sides! How wonderful!"
Fang Ziyan's sarcastic laughter grew even louder.
"I am not!"
Xu Qiushuang retorted, "I thought I could handle it properly."
"Besides, I didn't have to tell you at all, did I? Haven't I told you the truth now?"
"Moreover, I gave you a chance. You said it yourself—you couldn't come up with the one hundred thousand."
"There was nothing else I could do."
Fang Ziyan took a deep breath, his anger reaching an insurmountable peak.
Xu Qiushuang playing both sides!
Gu Tao plotting against him behind the scenes! These people really had some nerve!
He turned and pointed at Xu Lanhua. "Aren't you on the phone?"
"Go on, let Gu Tao come over and talk to me!"
Xu Lanhua was momentarily stunned, surprised that Fang Ziyan knew Gu Tao's name.
However, Gu Tao on the other end of the line had clearly heard Fang Ziyan's words.
He let out a laugh, sounding thoroughly gratified.
"Fang Ziyan, don't run off. Just stay right there and wait for me. I'm coming over now!"
With that, Gu Tao hung up the phone, straddled his Suzuki motorcycle, and sped toward the Xu residence.
Meanwhile, back at Fang Ziyan's rented apartment, a knock sounded on the door.
Anxious with worry, Jiang Xu opened it, only to discover that standing outside wasn't her son, but the tattooed young punks who had visited during the day.
"Auntie, is Dr. Fang at home?"
"My name is Miao Susu. I'm one of his patients, and I'd like to ask him to do us a favor."
The visitor was Miao Susu, who had come looking for Fang Ziyan under Gu Tao's instructions, preparing for a brawl later that night.
Jiang Xu shook her head. "He's not home. He went out."
"At work?"
Miao Susu paused in surprise. Today didn't seem to be Dr. Fang's night shift.
"No, he went to Shizhuang Town in the city. What did you need him for?" Jiang Xu explained.
Noticing her rather grim expression, Miao Susu's heart skipped a beat.
Could something have happened to Dr. Fang?
That simply wouldn't do—it would ruin tonight's big plan.
At this thought, Miao Susu's voice grew urgent.
"Auntie, Dr. Fang is a skilled doctor, and we have a patient who needs his help. If you tell me where he went, I'll go find him right now."
"This?" Jiang Xu hesitated for a moment before explaining, "He's in Shizhuang Town, at a residential compound called Yechen Huayuan."
Miao Susu nodded. "Thank you, Auntie."
With that, she rounded up her group of brothers and rushed hastily toward the Xu family's compound.
A short while later, Gu Tao rode his Suzuki up to the entrance of the compound.
His sleek motorcycle swerved dangerously close to Fang Ziyan before executing a sharp drift, stopping sideways right in front of Fang Ziyan and Xu Qiushuang.
His actions were dripping with provocation.
Only after dismounting did he remove his helmet, fixing a look of utter disdain on Fang Ziyan.
"You called me over. What do you want, esteemed Dr. Fang?"
"Do you think that just because you outrank me a bit at the hospital, you're some kind of big shot?"
"Are you good at treating illnesses?"
"Being good at treating illnesses doesn't mean a damn thing! To make it in the real world, you need power and background!"
"You're just some nobody with a bachelor's degree. I graduated from a top-tier university, my uncle is a chief physician, and my uncle on the other side runs the streets."
"You want to fight me? What do you even have to fight me with?"
