Du Yalan heard someone call her a dog and a piece of trash, and she was about to curse back. But when she turned her head and saw Chu Yan, she froze completely.

What a beautiful woman. She was so breathtaking that Du Yalan suddenly felt ashamed of her own appearance.

Whether it was her looks, her figure, or her bearing, she was far inferior to this perfect woman.

Feng Junwei was even more transfixed. He had originally felt rather pleased with himself for marrying such a beautiful wife as Du Yalan. Yet compared with the utterly stunning Chu Yan, Du Yalan instantly seemed far less appealing.

“Who are you? I advise you not to meddle in other people’s business!” Du Yalan asked with a frown, staring at the unfamiliar Chu Yan.

“You’re not worthy of knowing who I am, and I have no time to meddle in your pathetic affairs!” Chu Yan’s voice grew colder, her manner noble and aloof. “If I hear you badmouthing my fiancé again, don’t blame me for showing you no mercy!”

“What did you say? Jiang Chen is your fiancé? How is that possible?” Du Yalan cried out in shock. She could not accept that after she had dumped Jiang Chen, he had still managed to find a woman better than her!

“Miss, are you mistaken?” Feng Junwei found it even harder to accept. Pointing jealously at Jiang Chen, he belittled him, saying, “That brat is an orphan whose entire family is dead. He can barely support himself. Don’t let him deceive you!”

He had heard all about Jiang Chen from Du Yalan long ago. If a beauty like this could even take a liking to a useless man such as Jiang Chen, she might as well become Feng Junwei’s mistress!

“Even if he is an orphan who cannot support himself, I’m willing to support him. What does that have to do with either of you? A good dog doesn’t block the road. Move aside!” Chu Yan said coldly.

She linked her arm through Jiang Chen’s and walked past Du Yalan and Feng Junwei.

“You…” Both Du Yalan and Feng Junwei were furious. It was as though they had each been slapped across the face, and their expressions became hideous.

“That woman must be an ugly freak who had plastic surgery! Otherwise, why would she be interested in a useless man like Jiang Chen?” Du Yalan cursed resentfully, though it was unclear whether she was trying to comfort herself or Feng Junwei.

Feng Junwei had seen countless women, yet he could find no trace of plastic surgery on Chu Yan’s face. In a low voice, he said, “If I’m not mistaken, that beauty is an actress Jiang Chen hired!”

“They’re not really going inside to get married. They just want revenge on us! Just wait. They’ll come out soon. Perhaps they’ll even have to leave in a taxi, humiliated and dejected!”

Du Yalan sneered and nodded. She thought Feng Junwei’s explanation made perfect sense. Jiang Chen was merely trying to get revenge on her through this childish stunt. These days, the bar for hiring actresses was low; anyone with a bit of beauty was enough. Acting skills were hardly necessary.

Feng Junwei even went to the nearby parking lot and drove over his several-million-yuan Maybach, parking it at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau to block Jiang Chen and Chu Yan. Clearly, he intended to flaunt his wealth.

Before long, Jiang Chen and Chu Yan emerged after obtaining their marriage certificate.

“Jiang Chen, that actress you hired couldn’t have been cheap. Did you pay by the day or by the month?” Du Yalan stood before the Maybach with her arms folded, mocking him.

“Du Yalan, watch your mouth!” Jiang Chen snapped, his voice cold.

“Why pretend to be pure when you make your living selling yourself? Isn’t that right, Miss? The lady who sells both her talent and her body!”

Du Yalan gave a derisive laugh and looked provocatively at Chu Yan.

“Smack!”

Chu Yan raised her hand and slapped Du Yalan across the left side of her face, sending her staggering backward.

“How dare you hit me!” Du Yalan covered her cheek and cursed furiously. “Bitch! I’ll tear that pretty face of yours apart!”

She lunged at Chu Yan, clawing wildly as though she intended to scratch her face to pieces.

“Smack… ah!”

Jiang Chen swung his hand back and slapped Du Yalan across the right side of her face. She screamed and fell to the ground.

“If you keep running your filthy mouth and lay a hand on my wife again, one slap will be the least of your worries!” Jiang Chen warned coldly, looking down at Du Yalan sprawled in disarray.

Chu Yan had stood up for him. Naturally, he would not allow her to be bullied.

“Husband, avenge me!” Du Yalan cried to Feng Junwei. Her gaze toward Jiang Chen and Chu Yan was filled with venom. She wanted this shameless couple to pay the price!

“You’ve got some nerve! How dare you hit my woman!” Feng Junwei helped Du Yalan up from the ground and glared at Jiang Chen as he cursed.

“Get lost!” Jiang Chen spat coldly.

“You’re looking for death!” Feng Junwei launched a flying kick at Jiang Chen.

He was a taekwondo expert who had returned from studying abroad. Dealing with a good-for-nothing like Jiang Chen should have been effortless.

“Bang… pfft…”

Jiang Chen kicked Feng Junwei in the stomach, sending him flying and coughing up blood.

Chu Yan cast Jiang Chen a surprised glance. She had not expected him to be skilled not only in medicine, but in martial arts as well.

“Let’s go,” Jiang Chen said to Chu Yan.

Chu Yan took out her car keys and walked toward a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Its headlights came on, and the golden Spirit of Ecstasy rose from the hood as the two of them got into the car.

Feng Junwei and Du Yalan, both consumed by fury, were left dumbfounded. They were like a pair of ridiculous clowns who had tried to flaunt a several-million-yuan Maybach in front of a Rolls-Royce Phantom worth tens of millions.

“No! This can’t be real! Jiang Chen must have rented the Rolls-Royce! He even wears a counterfeit Armani suit. How could he possibly afford such an expensive luxury car?” Du Yalan shook her head repeatedly as she lay on the ground.

“That bastard! I’ll kill him!” Feng Junwei snarled, clutching his stomach.

He immediately took out his phone and prepared to call someone to kill Jiang Chen.

Inside the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

“Jiang Chen, I married you to fulfill the agreement between my grandfather and your master, and also to thank you for saving my grandfather. I’ll make sure you have no worries about food or clothing in the Chu family,” Chu Yan said as she drove. “But that doesn’t mean I like you, and it certainly doesn’t mean I’ll accept you. I hope you understand!”

In other words, marriage was merely a way of repaying his kindness. It did not include giving herself to him.

“I understand.” Sitting in the passenger seat, Jiang Chen went straight to the point. “There’s something I want to ask you. I hope you’ll answer me honestly.”

“Go ahead.” Chu Yan kept her eyes on the road.

“Four years ago, when the Jiang family was massacred, you happened to pass by outside their residence. Who did you see as the killer?” Jiang Chen asked seriously, studying Chu Yan’s profile.

“Skreee—”

Chu Yan’s lovely face changed dramatically. She slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a halt. Her body pitched forward, her face turning pale as though she had remembered something terrifying.

“Jiang Chen? The Jiang family? You’re a survivor of the Jiang family?” Chu Yan murmured to herself before abruptly turning her gaze toward him.

“Yes. You should remember now. Please tell me!” Jiang Chen met her eyes, desperate for the answer.

“I’m sorry. I can’t tell you.” Chu Yan looked away and lowered her head, gripping the steering wheel tightly as she refused him solemnly.

“Why?” Jiang Chen pressed anxiously.

“Because I don’t want the Chu family to become the next Jiang family!” Fear filled Chu Yan’s face. She closed her eyes, then opened them again, cold sweat appearing on her forehead.

“What if I have the ability to protect the Chu family?” Jiang Chen offered a condition.

“You?” Chu Yan looked utterly unconvinced. “You can’t even protect yourself, yet you’re talking about protecting the Chu family? The people behind this won’t spare you just because you’re a miracle doctor!”

“If you don’t want to die, you’d better hide your identity. Otherwise, you may not even know how you died!”

Chu Yan was genuinely afraid that the Chu family would follow in the Jiang family’s footsteps. If that happened, Jiang Chen’s rescue of her grandfather would have been for nothing.

“What will it take for you to believe me? Or tell me this—how do I prove that I can protect the Chu family?” Jiang Chen kept asking. He had to obtain a clue about the killers who had wiped out the Jiang family from Chu Yan’s lips.
