Don’t even think about laying a hand on my man!
The scream startled Aunt Chun and Wen Fanhai into rushing out at once.
Ji Shen still stood there, not moving a muscle.
“Miss Wen, conduct yourself with dignity.”
He shook Wen Yao off.
Wen Yao staggered and fell to the floor in a humiliating sprawl.
“Yao Yao, what happened to you?” Aunt Chun cried anxiously, hurrying over to help her precious daughter up.
Wen Shuang heard the noise and came out of the kitchen. When she saw Wen Yao disheveled and half-exposed, she immediately guessed what had happened.
So she had set her sights on her man.
“Mom, I’m fine... I just slipped and fell a moment ago!” Wen Yao said through clenched teeth as she struggled to her feet.
Wen Fanhai said, “You really are something! Police Officer Ji is still here, and you have no manners at all!”
Wen Shuang walked up to Ji Shen, laid a hand on his shoulder, and asked what was wrong.
Ji Shen’s lips curved faintly in irony. “Your sister wanted to speak with me just now, and then she lost her footing and fell. Next time, she ought to be more careful.”
Wen Yao caught the warning in Ji Shen’s eyes.
She understood then that Ji Shen was not like any of the men she had hooked before.
He was definitely a hard bone to crack.
Ji Shen and Wen Fanhai chatted in the living room.
Wen Shuang cornered Wen Yao in the kitchen and warned her, “Wen Yao, I don’t care how wildly you play around outside, or if you get yourself used up by others! But if you dare set your sights on my man, just watch how I beat you to death!”
Wen Yao was cowed by Wen Shuang’s bearing.
After a pause, she still refused to give in. “Wen Shuang, you’re afraid, aren’t you? You’re afraid I’ll snatch Officer Ji away, afraid you’re not charming enough yourself! Didn’t I take Brother Qin from you before?”
“Qin You slept with you because the two of you were equally disgusting! Besides, he only ever treated you like a game. Once he was bored, he’d probably forget you wherever you were, even if you were tucked into some corner.”
Wen Shuang said with contempt.
Wen Yao was about to scream back when Wen Fanhai called them out to eat fruit.
Wen Shuang seized Wen Yao by the collar. “If you dare have any more filthy ideas, just wait and see!”
After they left the Wen house, Ji Shen noticed Wen Shuang seemed a little gloomy.
“I clearly and righteously rejected your sister on the spot. I didn’t do anything extra, Teacher Wen.” Ji Shen raised both hands to prove his innocence.
Wen Shuang glared at him. “I’m angry.”
“Angry about what?”
“Because you’re too handsome. Wherever you go, there’s no peace.”
There had been He Suosuo before, then Wen Yao, and before that Jiang Ning.
It left her feeling threatened at every turn.
Ji Shen pulled her into his arms. “My heart only has you in it now. Can’t you feel that?”
“Feel what?”
“Feel how scorching hot I am every night. Hasn’t Teacher Wen always been left crying out from the heat?”
“Get lost!” Wen Shuang pounded his chest. “Shameless old man!”
...
Recently, Wen Shuang had taken a liking to a newly opened cafe near the theater.
She often came by for a drink and sat for a while.
That day, after rehearsal, she ordered an iced Americano and thought she’d get one for Yao Qianqian as well.
She had just sent the message.
When she looked up, she saw a face she loathed.
He Suosuo and her little clique were sitting by the window, taking selfies and checking in.
They twisted and posed in all sorts of affected, simpering ways.
Wen Shuang quickly turned away, but He Suosuo had already spotted her.
“What bad luck, honestly. Coming to check in at a cafe and still running into someone I hate!” He Suosuo said on purpose, loudly.
The girl beside her asked, “Who is she?”
“She’s that wild pheasant I told you about, the one who thinks she can soar from the branch to become a phoenix—Wen Shuang,” He Suosuo sneered, drawing out her words. “She’s been pestering Brother Shen every single day, in every possible way. Brother Shen’s soul has already been stolen by that damn vixen!”
Wen Shuang rolled her eyes and took her coffee, ready to leave.
But the girl known as Aiai refused to let her go.
She blocked Wen Shuang’s path. “You shameless thing, daring to fight Suosuo for Police Officer Ji?”
Wen Shuang said, “No wonder people say birds of a feather flock together. Hanging around with He Suosuo, your brain can’t be that bright either!”
“What did you say? My brain’s not working? I won’t let you insult Suosuo!” Aiai grabbed the coffee beside her and splashed it at Wen Shuang’s face. Even though Wen Shuang dodged as fast as she could, some of it still hit her.
It even stained her clothes.
He Suosuo clapped from the side. “Aiai, well done!”
Wen Shuang snapped.
In one swift motion, she poured the iced Americano straight over Aiai’s head.
The brown liquid ran down the girl’s face, ruining the makeup and styling she had spent hours on in an instant.
“Aaah! You bitch!! How dare you splash me?”
Aiai lunged for Wen Shuang, but Wen Shuang had studied dance; her coordination and reflexes were excellent. With a high kick, she sent Aiai crashing to the floor.
He Suosuo said angrily, “Wen Shuang, you’re assaulting people in broad daylight. I’m calling the police!”
“Then call them. It just so happens that when Brother Shen gets here, we can review the surveillance footage and see who started it first.”
He Suosuo said in a rage, “Don’t think it’s such a big deal just because Brother Shen likes you now. Aunt Ji would never look twice at an actress like you! Someone like you isn’t even fit to be another executive’s mistress.”
“So that’s the daughter of the He family—how vulgar she speaks!”
Ning Su happened to be in this cafe that afternoon, sketching designs for the clothes of the second half of the year.
Then she heard a commotion up front.
“Mrs. Ning!”
Ning Su was a world-renowned fashion designer. It could be said that in today’s domestic and international fashion circles, she stood at the very top.
The moment He Suosuo saw her, she instinctively tucked her tail between her legs.
As for Ning Su, she seemed gentle at first glance, but in truth she carried great authority.
Aiai finally managed to get up and started cursing at Wen Shuang.
Ning Su said coolly, “You two may be young ladies from proper families, but this is the sort of behavior you show? Since Miss Wen came in, she has never provoked you once, and yet you went straight to insults and violence. Even if the police came, you’d have no justification.”
With that, she handed Wen Shuang a handkerchief.
Wen Shuang thanked her.
The handkerchief was exquisitely made, with a small freesia embroidered in one corner.
He Suosuo tugged at her friend and lowered her head.
Ning Su said, “Apologize to her.”
He Suosuo gritted her teeth, unwilling.
Ning Su raised her voice. “I don’t mind informing your father about what happened today.”
At the mention of their fathers, the two immediately deflated like punctured balls. They had both been spoiled by their mothers since childhood, while their fathers were strict. In the end, they could only apologize obediently to Wen Shuang.
Wen Shuang waved them off. “Since you’ve apologized, get lost. Don’t ever come to this cafe again. It’s unlucky.”
“You—”
But when He Suosuo met Ning Su’s calm gaze, she could only clench her teeth and drag Aiai away.
No one knew what sort of magic Wen Shuang possessed. That Madam Ning always stepped up for her whenever she saw her. In He Suosuo’s memory, she had never been like this before.
“Thank you, Madam Ning,” Wen Shuang said.
“Your clothes are dirty. Come home with me and change into something else,” Madam Ning said. When she looked at Wen Shuang, there was a natural warmth and tenderness in her eyes—an emotion she had never felt toward anyone except Jiang Ning.
