107: Officer Ji’s Fierce Protection of a Woman
Page 1/3
“Shen...” Wen Shuang finally brightened when she saw Ji Shen.
These past days, he had been the pillar of her spirit. The moment she saw him, an immeasurable sense of safety returned to her.
Ji Shen strode over, his face stern. “Did they hurt you?”
“They did. Mrs. Xia came in and called me a slut. If it weren’t for Yan, I’d have been beaten half to death by now.” Wen Shuang glared at her, furious. “She even called me a fox spirit!”
Tang Yan added, “That’s right! Officer Ji, you have no idea how violent they were. They barged in, screamed at Shuang right in front of her face, and not a single trace of remorse. It was beyond cruel.”
Ji Shen radiated cold authority. Mrs. Xia involuntarily stepped back.
And yet she still raised her voice. “So what if I raised my hand? Anyway, I didn’t really strike her in the face. It was that little brat beside her who kept slapping me again and again. I haven’t even settled the score yet!”
Tang Yan said, “It was legitimate defense. If I hadn’t blocked you, you’d have sent Shuang off the bed!”
Mrs. Xia kept barking. Ji Shen cut her off. “Be quiet and get out.”
Had he not regarded her as an elder, he would have acted already; none of her shouting would have lasted a moment.
Mr. Xia would not leave either. “Shen, are you really going to go this far for this woman? Ten years in prison—so much for Anran, still a blossom of youth. She is to marry Qin You next month. You know what that means for her.”
“You think ten years is too long, but I think it isn’t enough.”
Ji Shen pointed to Wen Shuang’s leg, wrapped in thick plaster. In his eyes gleamed something like ice.
“Wen Shuang—since she was four she trained in dance until she turned twenty-four. She poured years of sweat and effort into this to become the woman who can now dazzle on stage. And because of your daughter’s jealousy, they destroyed her leg. You keep saying Anran is young and still so little, that she is marrying next month. But have you considered, once Shuang’s leg is broken, whether Wen Shuang’s twenty years were all for nothing?”
The Xia parents were struck silent by the force of Ji Shen’s eruption.
Xia Hanyan’s face darkened.
He had seen Wen Shuang dance before.
On stage she moved like startled cranes and drifting dragons—so light, so graceful, like a celestial beauty.
And now she had been ruined by his sister!
The whole Xia family was left speechless.
“Sorry, Miss Wen. I’ll apologize on Anran’s behalf...”
“No need to apologize again, Mr. Xia. I told you long ago that an apology from you in Anran’s name is useless. You never taught her properly. No matter how often you clean up after her, it won’t change anything.”
Wen Shuang closed her eyes, unwilling to look at them anymore.
“Shen, I’m tired. Make them leave.”

Ji Shen immediately called security and had every member of the Xia family driven out. He ordered that from now on they were forbidden to set foot at the threshold of this ward.
The argument had left Wen Shuang utterly spent. The condition that had improved earlier that day had now collapsed again into exhaustion.
When Tang Yan saw Ji Shen arrive, she respectfully withdrew and kindly closed the door behind them.
Only the two of them remained.
Fatigued, Wen Shuang leaned against Ji Shen’s shoulder. “Shen, my heart is so tired...”
“Those Xias can go to hell,” Ji Shen said. “Don’t let them bother you. I’ve already told security—if it happens again, they’re to use batons and throw them out.”
He touched her forehead with concern. “It’s my fault. I wasn’t here in time and almost let you get hurt.”
“Shen, I know you’ve been so busy with this lately.”
Wen Shuang tightened her arms around him. The badge on his shoulder rubbed her face enough to ache, yet she did not move away.
“These past few days I’ve thought a lot by myself. If I can’t dance that hard anymore, I’ll open an academy to teach children. Anyway, I won’t give up the path of dance easily.”
“You’re not done with dancing,” Ji Shen said, gentle and firm. “The specialist who came last time has already drawn up a new plan based on your condition. Whether you want to run a school or continue dancing, I’ll support you.”
“Thank you, Shen...”
Without Ji Shen, she could not imagine what state she would be in now.
“Between us, there’s no need to thank me.”
She wore loose hospital clothes; chestnut waves fell around her, and unlike before, with its seductive charm, she now carried the beauty of one made fragile by illness.
Ji Shen’s eyes grew deep, and in the end he only gave her a restrained kiss on the corner of her lips.
His throat moved as he swallowed.
“Believe me. Everything will be all right.”
....
When the Wen family learned Wen Shuang had been admitted, they came in a rush.
Wen Fanhai, seeing her like this, could not hold back tears. He knelt before her and for a long time could not raise his head, and in the end it was Wen Shuang who had to reassure him that she was fine.
“It’s my fault, Dad. You heard the news too late, so you came only now.”
Wen Shuang shook her head.
“Dad, I was afraid it would worry you, so I didn’t tell you right away. But look at me—I’m not badly hurt. I just need to recover for a while. It’s a good time for me to rest anyway.”
After a week of calm, her mood had improved much from the beginning.
Wen Fanhai’s eyes were still red. “You’ve always been the kind who reports only good news and never worry. Even with such a disaster, you endured it all alone!”

“Don’t I still have Officer Ji?” Wen Shuang winked at him and smiled. “I’m fine, Dad.”
Wen Fanhai’s eyes grew even redder.
He knew what dance meant to her. His heart was breaking to see her laid up, yet she comforted him.
Once again, at a moment when Ji Shen was not there, Mr. and Mrs. Xia shamelessly came back to cause trouble.
Wen Fanhai happened to be present, and he immediately went out and shouted at them. If not for security blocking the way, Mr. Xia would have left with a blackened face and swollen nose.
“If you dare touch my daughter again, I’ll fight you myself!”
He returned and took Wen Shuang’s hand.
“As long as Dad is here, no one will be allowed to harm you.”
Wen Shuang’s own eyes had begun to water.
Aunt Chun and Wen Yao stood nearby, offering a few words of fake concern.
Between those mother and daughter, it was far more delight in another’s misfortune.
No matter how extraordinary Wen Shuang had been before, wasn’t she now lying in bed like someone broken and useless?
Wen Yao felt a deep joy inside. She thought heaven itself was helping her.
Qin You arrived carrying a large bundle of things. The moment Wen Shuang saw him, she snapped, “Get out!”
Qin You said bitterly, “Shuang, I just came to see you once. As long as you’re okay, that’s enough. Don’t send me away so quickly.”
“Out.”
Now, whenever she saw anyone connected with Anran, everything filled her with disgust and revulsion.
Qin You winced inwardly. Wen Shuang had come to loathe him to this extent.
He turned away in silence.
After a few steps, he was suddenly pulled into an embrace.
“Brother Qin!”
He turned with a start—and it was Wen Yao’s face he saw.
