Wen Shuang and Ji Shen had finally cleared up the knot in their hearts and made peace.
The next day, when Tang Yan came over, she found the two of them had already returned to the sweet, lovestruck days of their romance.
Wen Shuang was leaning against the bed, her long chestnut hair spilling over her shoulders, while Ji Shen held a bowl and fed her one spoonful at a time.
Tang Yan was so envious she could hardly hide it.
She sighed, "At last you two are reconciled! Before this, every time I came into that ward, it felt like I’d stepped into an Arctic glacier!"
Wen Shuang laughed. "Wasn’t that all his fault?"
Amusement flickered in Ji Shen’s eyes. "My fault. It’s all my fault."
Under her unyielding rehabilitation, Wen Shuang’s leg had slowly but steadily improved. From only being able to hold on for half an hour a day at first, she could now walk on her own for two hours, and the pain had eased considerably.
The doctor, upon seeing this, praised her for her iron will and called it a miracle.
No one could recover that quickly; Wen Shuang was the first they had ever seen.
If she kept following this pace, in another month she would be able to return to the theater and dance again.
When Yao Qianqian heard the news, she was overjoyed. "Shuangshuang, come back soon! Without you, our dance troupe has lost its center. We’re all waiting for you now~"
Even the dean and the deputy dean called with warm words of concern.
No one had expected Wen Shuang to recover so quickly.
Ji Shen stayed with Wen Shuang throughout, accompanying her from the days when rehabilitation left her drenched in sweat to the time when she gradually became as light on her feet as the wind.
That afternoon,
the little garden of the hospital was strewn with falling blossoms.
Wen Shuang was suddenly inspired and began trying to dance.
She danced to "Red Beans."
Red beans grow in the south,
How many branches in spring?
Gather them oft, I pray you,
For they are the truest tokens of longing.
The woman wore a loose hospital gown, yet it could not hide the softness of her figure. With a turn as graceful as a startled swan in flight, her fingers shaped an orchid with effortless freedom, and Ji Shen’s eyes deepened as he watched.
But her foot had not fully recovered after all. On her final spin, she accidentally twisted in pain and collapsed.
The man bent down, caught her in his arms, and turned her back against his chest.
"The dance is beautiful. But don’t push yourself."
This was Wen Shuang’s first time dancing since the car accident. That feeling of moving from the ground into the dance again was something she had not sensed in so long that joy surged through her heart.
"Shen-ge, I can dance again! I really can dance again!"
"I told you that you could. See? Just as beautiful as ever."
And this time, Wen Shuang’s dance carried something more, too: the resonance of a phoenix reborn from the ashes, a spirit of resilience and unyielding strength.
She smiled like a flower in full bloom. "Shen-ge, then let’s go back!"
Ji Shen lowered his head and claimed her lips.
He had held back for nearly a month, and now he almost ravenously seized the woman’s sweetest tenderness.
Wen Shuang gave a soft cry. His tongue slipped in through her slightly parted lips. She did not resist; instead, she wrapped her arms around Ji Shen’s neck and met him in a fervent, tangled kiss.
The sight of the two of them locked in embrace and devotion was beautiful, like a painting.
A young nurse on the third floor saw them and immediately tugged at the girls beside her. "Come quick, come quick! The most gorgeous fairy sister and the handsome police officer in the whole hospital are kissing!"
Word spread from the third floor.
Heads appeared from the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors in almost no time.
When Ji Shen finally lifted his head after the kiss, thoroughly satisfied, he was startled to find a whole row of onlookers.
"My God, why are there so many people!"
Wen Shuang immediately hid inside Ji Shen’s coat.
Next time, she would never kiss him publicly downstairs again.
Their relationship was visibly growing sweeter by the day, and even Old Madam Ji was delighted to see it.
"Ah Shen, you’re already twenty-eight this year. If you can settle down, do it quickly. I’m desperate to hold my grandson or granddaughter!"
Ji Shen smiled. "Shuangshuang’s body still hasn’t fully recovered. Why the hurry?"
"True! The most important thing right now is Shuangshuang’s health!"
Old Madam Ji was extraordinarily kind to Wen Shuang. Every day, a steady stream of supplements was sent to the ward, along with all kinds of nourishing soups to help her recuperate. Within just two months, Wen Shuang had noticeably filled out.
Gloomily, she touched the extra flesh at her waist. "Oh no, I’ve gotten fat again! At this rate I won’t be able to dance when I go back!"
Old Madam Ji said, "Where is there any fat? You still look slender to me. Shuangshuang, a girl needs a little flesh to be healthy!"
A little flesh also feels nicer to hold.
Ji Shen also said, "Exactly. Listen to Grandma and eat more, drink more. Don’t worry, we won’t be ruined by feeding you."
Wen Shuang broke into radiant laughter.
It truly felt wonderful to be protected like this.
During that time, Madam Ning also visited once. Seeing Wen Shuang improve, she too was very happy.
Wen Shuang noticed that there was much more laughter in her face than before and guessed that it must be because her daughter had returned.
Madam Ning held Wen Shuang’s hand. "Shuangshuang, I heard you and Officer Ji had a little quarrel some time ago. Don’t overthink it. Ningning and Officer Ji have already broken up, and the most important person in Officer Ji’s heart now is still you. I’ve also spoken to Ningning and told her to mind her boundaries from now on."
Wen Shuang had not expected Madam Ning to be so reasonable, or even to stand on her side and think for her sake.
"Aunt Ning, I’m fine. Ji Shen and I did have a little misunderstanding before, but don’t worry, we’ve already made up completely!"
Madam Ning lovingly stroked the ends of her hair. "Mm. Auntie truly hopes you two can stay together for a long time."
Her Ningning had already missed her chance with Officer Ji. They were not right for each other, so there was no need to keep entangling themselves.
When Wen Hai had time, he also came often to visit Wen Shuang, usually bringing Chun Yi and Wen Yao with him.
But whenever Wen Shuang saw that mother and daughter, she felt nothing but hypocrisy. Still, she could not bring herself to say anything to Wen Hai, after all they were his family.
One day, Tang Yan leaned conspiratorially close to Wen Shuang’s ear and told her something that made her eyes widen in shock.
"Really??"
"Of course it’s real. Why would I joke about that? I saw her go to the obstetrics department several times. Later I got curious and asked a friend of mine there. And sure enough! She said Wen Yao has been pregnant for a month already!"
Wen Shuang was stunned. She had always known Wen Yao’s private life was a mess. Ever since freshman year she had been fooling around, changing boyfriends almost every week, and often not coming home at night.
If Chun Yi had not covered for her at home, Wen Hai would have discovered it long ago.
No wonder.
Several times before, Wen Yao had come over with her hand on her stomach, and once she had even vomited, saying her stomach had been upset lately.
So she really was pregnant.
"No idea whose brat she’s carrying in that belly," Tang Yan said with a snort.
Wen Shuang fanned herself lazily. "Whoever it is, it has nothing to do with me. Let her worry about it herself."
"Shuangshuang—!"
Qin You suddenly appeared at the ward door!
He had truly been unable to suppress his longing for Wen Shuang any longer. Hearing Wen Yao say that Wen Shuang’s leg was much better now, he had not been able to resist coming to see her.
"Qin You, you still have the nerve to come here? Get out!"
Tang Yan immediately grabbed a broom.
