There are plenty of good men in this world.
Ji Shen had become increasingly busy; overtime and night shifts had become the norm.
The man now returned home in the early hours of the morning, by which time she was already asleep in the guest bedroom. By the time she woke up the next day, he had already left for work. Even though they lived under the same roof, they never saw each other.
Wen Shuang found it quite ironic. She couldn’t tell if Ji Shen was coming home so late because of his heavy caseload or because his "white moonlight" had returned.
Looking at Weibo, Jiang Ning had been quite active since returning to the country. Just two days ago, she had walked a red carpet, looking absolutely stunning in a bright red gown. Wen Shuang recognized that the gown was a new release from Ning Su’s autumn collection, and it fit Jiang Ning perfectly.
She had to admit, Jiang Ning was truly beautiful. She could handle the high-definition lenses of the media with ease, remained graceful and poised in every situation, and possessed a gentle, pleasant personality and high emotional intelligence. Facing the tricky questions of reporters, she could resolve them skillfully without making anyone uncomfortable. This was Ji Shen’s first love; she was indeed excellent.
Wen Shuang had never felt insecure before, but after Jiang Ning’s return, she found herself unconsciously comparing herself to the other woman. Even though she told herself it was wrong, she couldn't stop. As it turned out, men could truly make women lose their sense of self. She began to practice her dancing even more diligently, trying to keep her mind off these thoughts.
On the weekend, Wen Shuang returned to the Wen family home.
"Oh my, Shuangshuang, why are you here? You just got out of the hospital; it must have been so exhausting to come all this way. You should have told us, and we would have come to you," Aunt Chun said, her attitude toward Wen Shuang now incredibly enthusiastic.
Wen Shuang replied indifferently, "I’m fine. My leg is much better now, and in a little while, I’ll be able to return to the dance troupe."
"That’s good, that’s good! Your father and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief!"
Because of some issues at the company, Wen Fanhai hadn't returned yet. Only Aunt Chun and Wen Yao were home. Wen Shuang sat down. It was strange; she had lived in this house for over twenty years, but after moving out, she felt no attachment upon returning. Perhaps, apart from Wen Fanhai, this house had never offered her a sense of family. Over the years, she had been locked in a constant power struggle with this mother and daughter, which was both tiring and annoying. Now that she only visited occasionally, it was peaceful.
Wen Shuang planned to wait quietly for Wen Fanhai, but Aunt Chun hovered over to her with a smile. "Shuangshuang, come, have some tea."
Wen Shuang declined.
"Shuangshuang, Yaoyao is getting married to Qin You in the second half of the year. You’ve heard the news, right? You don't mind, do you?"
Wen Fanhai had already mentioned this to her at the hospital. Hearing Aunt Chun bring it up now, she felt it was inexplicable. "Why would I be angry? What is there to be angry about? How does Wen Yao marrying Qin You affect me?"
"Well... after all, Qin You was your ex-boyfriend. I was just afraid you might feel uncomfortable..."
Wen Shuang’s expression turned cold. "A man as scummy as Qin You? I find even mentioning him bad luck. Wen Yao has the 'skills' to tame him, so that’s perfect. Out of sight, out of mind."
Aunt Chun’s face stiffened.
"Sister, don't say things just to be spiteful. I know you're envious of me," Wen Yao said, descending the stairs while cradling her stomach with a smug smile. "Back when you were dating Qin You, Mrs. Qin wouldn't even let you through their front door. But now, I’m going to be a member of the Qin family. Don't go around saying the grapes are sour just because you can't reach them."
Ever since Wen Yao learned she could marry into the Qin family, she had been riding high. She had always been jealous that Wen Shuang had the love of both Qin You and Ji Shen. But she realized that no matter how much Wen Shuang dated them, she could never enter either family's gate. She, however, had easily hooked Qin You after Xia Anran disappeared.
Wen Shuang felt as if she were listening to a massive joke. "Wen Yao, you really are confident in yourself. You don't actually think Qin You is marrying you because of who you are, do you? You and I both know that if you weren't pregnant with this child, would you even be able to step foot in the Qin household? You’re dreaming!"
She had seen how disdainful Mrs. Qin’s expression was when she saw Wen Yao at the hospital.
Wen Yao wasn't listening anymore; she just wanted to flaunt her status. "Sister, that just means I have the ability to conceive. As for you, so what if you're dating Officer Ji? I heard that after his first love returned, he doesn't have eyes for you anymore. Even on the day you were discharged from the hospital, he still abandoned you! Sister, why don't you just give up on Officer Ji and try finding another wealthy family?" Wen Yao covered her mouth and laughed mockingly.
"Wen Yao, don't think that just because you're pregnant, I won't dare to touch you!" Wen Shuang’s beautiful brows arched defiantly. "Besides, you know better than anyone how this child came to be and why!"
Wen Yao froze instantly. This child... No! It was impossible! There was no way Wen Shuang could have known.
Wen Yao stammered, "What are you talking about? I don't understand!"
Just then, Wen Fanhai returned. Seeing Wen Shuang, he was delighted and hurried over to greet her. Aunt Chun quickly tugged at Wen Yao, signaling her to be quiet. Wen Yao immediately put on a mask of joy, her face changing faster than the turning of a page. Wen Shuang couldn't be bothered to argue with her anymore. She had never envied Wen Yao; she didn't believe that marrying into the Qin family was a good thing at all. Beyond the irresponsible Qin You, just dealing with Mrs. Qin would be enough to make Wen Yao’s life miserable.
"How is your leg? Does it still hurt when you're home? Are you uncomfortable?" Wen Fanhai asked with genuine concern.
Wen Shuang spun around gracefully in front of him. "I'm fine, Dad. I'm doing great now!"
"That's good, that's good!" Wen Fanhai looked around and didn't see Ji Shen. "Where is Officer Ji?"
At the mention of him, Wen Shuang’s expression turned unnatural. She said lightly, "He’s too busy, so I didn't ask him to come."
Aunt Chun chimed in, "Oh! Shuangshuang, I don't know if I should say this, but I saw the news recently. I saw Officer Ji getting very close to a female celebrity. I heard she returned from abroad and that they had a history?"
Wen Fanhai frowned. "What history?"
Aunt Chun replied, "Well... I'm not entirely sure..."
Wen Shuang shot Aunt Chun a cold glance. She knew the woman was just gloating, thinking that because Wen Yao was marrying into the Qin family, they were now part of the elite, and she was using the opportunity to mock her.
"They have no history, Aunt Chun. You're overthinking it."
Wen Fanhai had seen Wen Shuang and Ji Shen arguing before. He reached out and patted Wen Shuang’s shoulder. "It’s alright, Shuangshuang! If that Ji fellow doesn't treat you well, we don't need him! Our Shuangshuang is so talented; there are plenty of good men in this world. Dad will always love you!"
That night, Wen Shuang returned home. As she stepped out of the bathroom after a shower, she heard the sound of the front door opening.
