When it was finally over, Ji Shen looked at the woman sprawled on the bed, seeming utterly devoid of spirit. A trace of pity stirred in his heart.

“Wen Shuang, I went too far tonight. But as long as you’re willing to come back, I—”

Wen Shuang sat up and calmly fastened her buttons.

“Officer Ji, if you have needs again next time, please contact me in advance.”

The marks from his kisses were starkly visible across her chest, revealing just how fierce they had been together on that large bed moments ago.

She quickly pulled on her clothes.

Ji Shen’s cold sneer returned. “Fine. Those were your words. From now on, you’d better come whenever I call.”

After they began living separately, they had instead started following the physical relationship they had agreed upon earlier.

During those encounters at the hotel, Ji Shen truly showed no mercy toward Wen Shuang. No matter how much she cried out that it hurt, he acted as though he heard nothing and continued taking her relentlessly.

When it was over, he would simply leave.

They were intimately entangled in bed, yet once they stepped away from it, they became strangers once more.

Everyone on the criminal investigation team could tell that their captain was in a terrible mood.

Wen Shuang had also stopped bringing meals to the police station.

Xiao Zhang leaned against the window, looking melancholy. “Could it be that Captain Ji did something awful lately and our sister-in-law got angry enough to break up with him?”

“Yeah. With Captain Ji’s terrible temper, she must have had enough.”

“Captain Ji was probably dumped. That’s why he’s in such a foul mood.”

…

Ji Shen entered with a cold expression.

Everyone fell silent at once.

Not a sound could be heard.

That noon, a chauffeur-driven van suddenly stopped outside the police station. A woman wearing enormous sunglasses stepped out and walked inside.

The security guard stopped her. “Excuse me, may I ask who you are?”

“I’m Jiang Ning.” The woman removed her sunglasses and smiled sweetly. “I’m here to bring Officer Ji some food.”

The guard recognized the famous actress Jiang Ning—and realized she had come specifically to see Ji Shen—so he immediately let her through.

For the entire week, Ji Shen had practically lived in his office, investigating the case through the night. Whenever exhaustion overwhelmed him, he simply slept at the station.

He did not even go home.

Ever since Wen Shuang had moved out, he had not returned. The apartment felt empty and unfamiliar without her.

It left him irritable as well.

There were two knocks on the door.

“Come in.”

Ji Shen assumed it was Xiao Zhang and the others coming to report on the case. But when he looked up, he saw Jiang Ning instead.

“What are you doing here?” He frowned. “Are the guards downstairs letting anyone in now?”

“Brother Shen, don’t be angry. I came to bring you dinner. I remember your stomach has never been very good. I happened to pass by Jade Tower tonight and thought of the dishes you like, so I brought some for you.”

Jiang Ning carried an exquisite food box. She took out plate after plate of delicate dishes. “They’re all prepared according to the flavors you used to enjoy. Try them.”

The dishes were indeed exquisite, and the flavors were exactly the ones he had once loved.

Ji Shen had not eaten all day because of work, yet he had no appetite whatsoever for the delicacies before him.

“I’m not eating. Take them home.”

“Brother Shen, at least have a little.” Jiang Ning noticed the exhaustion on his face. “Work is important, but you have to take care of your health too.”

Ji Shen said, “Thank you for your concern. You should go home.”

“You look exhausted, Brother Shen. You need to get some proper rest.” Jiang Ning rose, then asked in an apparently casual tone, “By the way, where is Miss Wen? As your girlfriend, shouldn’t she be taking good care of you?”

Ji Shen’s expression turned cold.

He did not respond.

Jiang Ning immediately realized that something must have gone wrong between them.

She slowly moved closer. “Brother Shen, if Miss Wen isn’t considerate enough, there are other people who would be.”

Ji Shen stepped away from her. “Jiang Ning, I still have work to do.”

“I can keep you company,” Jiang Ning said. “When you were studying, wasn’t I always by your side?”

“That was in the past.”

“Can’t it be the same now?”

Ji Shen was silent for a long while. Then he raised his eyes.

“Jiang Ning, I know you’re unwilling to accept things as they are, which is why you’ve come looking for me again and again. So let me make this clear today: what we had ended long ago. I admit that I truly loved you back then. But after you chose without hesitation to go abroad, we were over.”

Jiang Ning could not accept it. “Brother Shen, I admit that my leaving back then was very sudden for you. But I loved you. I only chose to pursue my own dream first, which was why I went abroad. Look at me—I’ve become quite successful, haven’t I? And now I’m back. We can still continue where we left off!”

“There’s no denying that we loved each other once.” Ji Shen acknowledged this as he looked up. “But now, we don’t.”

Back then, Ji Shen had been willing to give Jiang Ning everything.

Whenever he had free time, he would accompany her wherever she wanted to go. He would stay up all night talking with her, take her out for all kinds of delicious food, and surprise her in countless ways.

He had even placed her on his life plan long ago.

At the time, he had intended to wait through her four years of university and marry her as soon as she graduated.

But he had never expected Jiang Ning to choose, decisively, to go abroad after finishing high school.

She had even wanted Ji Shen to go with her.

Yet Ji Shen had dreamed of becoming a police officer since childhood, and he had chosen a university program in that field. Thus, the two of them embarked upon different paths in life.

Jiang Ning’s eyes reddened. “Brother Shen, is there really no possibility left for us at all?”

“None.”

Ji Shen raised his head.

“Unless there’s something important, don’t come looking for me again. Wen Shuang will be unhappy.”

“That Miss Wen… Is she really that important to you now?”

“She’s my girlfriend. Of course she’s important.”

As long as Ji Shen refused to agree to a breakup, Wen Shuang would remain his girlfriend forever.

A beautiful yet stubborn face flashed through his mind.

After hearing his answer, Jiang Ning left.

Ji Shen made no attempt to stop her. Instead, once she was gone, he gathered up all the dishes and prepared to throw them away.

But halfway there, he suddenly felt that wasting food was shameful.

So he gave all the packed dishes to Xiao Zhang, Xiao Li, and the others, who were still working overtime.

“Wow, Captain Ji, you’re finally acting like a decent human being?”

“We actually get a late-night snack! Was this sent by our sister-in-law?”

“If you want to eat, then stop talking,” Ji Shen said coldly.

Everyone immediately opened the food containers and bent over their meals.

Xiao Zhang took a bite. His palate was remarkably discerning.

“It’s delicious, but it still can’t compare to the home cooking our sister-in-law makes!”

Ji Shen’s gaze deepened.

He had been busy all week and had not found the time to see Wen Shuang.

Taking his car keys, Ji Shen headed straight for the opera house.

He did not want to continue this cold war with Wen Shuang.

Nor did he want to break up with her. Wen Shuang had a good disposition, a beautiful face, and an excellent figure. Although she occasionally lost her temper, she was, all in all, a wonderful woman.

Ji Shen drove rapidly to the theater and parked outside.

After waiting for half an hour, Wen Shuang finally came out.

Ji Shen’s eyes lit up, and he opened the car door.

But then Xia Hanyan walked over to her as well.

Wen Shuang gave Xia Hanyan a gentle smile.

Seeing this, Ji Shen was consumed by fury.

Author’s note:

Officer Ji, you totally deserve this—hahaha!

I may have accidentally gotten the chapter title wrong…
