[150] Let’s Break Up for Good!

The dance drama Wen Shuang was performing that evening was *Wang Zhaojun’s Journey Beyond the Frontier*.
After she had been discharged from the hospital last time, the troupe had assigned the role to her again.
Wen Shuang played the part beautifully, and the audience’s response was overwhelmingly positive.
After the performance, she took her bow.
She politely declined the actors’ invitation to dinner, removed her makeup, and planned to go home and get some early rest.
The moment she stepped outside, she saw Ji Shen standing at the entrance in his police uniform, and he startled her.
The man’s expression was grim, shrouded in a layer of icy mist.
“I just got off work, Officer Ji. You don’t need to be in such a hurry.” Wen Shuang assumed Ji Shen had come to find her for that sort of thing again, and replied coldly.
Without a word, Ji Shen seized her hand and pulled her outside.
Wen Shuang stumbled after him. “Ji Shen, what are you doing? Have you gone crazy again?”
Many people in the theater were watching them.
With an expressionless face, Ji Shen dragged Wen Shuang into the car. Before she had even settled into her seat, he slammed on the accelerator and sped away.
The sudden lurch nearly sent Wen Shuang crashing into the dashboard.
Fortunately, she caught hold of the seat belt in time and was not thrown forward.
Ji Shen drove recklessly. He rarely drove with such urgency, and halfway there, Wen Shuang felt as though she was about to be sent straight to heaven.
“Ji Shen, where are you taking me?”
The man pressed his thin lips together.
His face remained stern from beginning to end, and he did not say a single word.
At last, the car stopped outside the hospital.
Wen Shuang could not understand it at all. “Why did you bring me to the hospital? I already showed you the test results last time. I’m not pregnant, and I didn’t lie to you! Don’t you believe me, so you want me to get tested again?”
Ji Shen replied, “It’s not about that.”
“Then what is it?” She certainly did not believe Ji Shen had brought her there out of kindness for another examination.
“This afternoon, Jiang Ning was nearly sexually assaulted by a group of thugs. She reported it to the police and said you were behind it, so I brought you here.” The man looked at her without expression.
“What? She was nearly assaulted?” Wen Shuang’s mind went blank. “I didn’t do anything like that!”
Without giving her a chance to argue, Ji Shen continued pulling her upstairs. The way he was acting made Wen Shuang feel that if she resisted now, he might put handcuffs on her.
“Jiang Ning wants to see you. She wants to confront you face-to-face.”

He turned his face toward the front, making his expression impossible to read once more. “Wen Shuang, the situation is unfavorable for you right now. I suggest that you meet with her so everything can be made clearer.”
“I didn’t do anything like that. Why should I meet her?”
“Precisely because you didn’t do it. You need to explain everything clearly.”
In the end, Wen Shuang went up to the fifth floor.
The familiar smell of hospital disinfectant reached her nose.
Ji Shen strode forward and pushed open the door. Inside, Jiang Ning lay weakly on the hospital bed, her beautiful face completely drained of color. The moment she saw Ji Shen, her eyes lit up, and she called softly, “Brother Shen!”
But when she saw Wen Shuang, she cried out, “It’s you! Wen Shuang, you were the one who sent those men to assault me!”
Wen Shuang had never imagined Jiang Ning could be so shameless.
“I didn’t.”
“Miss Wen, now that things have come to this, stop trying to deny it!”
Jiang Ning’s manager rose from the bedside and took out an audio recording. “The thugs clearly said they had been sent by you when they tried to attack Jiang Ning. You wanted to ruin her reputation so she would never be able to remain in show business. Miss Wen, you are truly vicious!”
Wen Shuang listened to the recording in disbelief.
She shook her head. “I didn’t do anything like that. I, Wen Shuang, would never stoop to such a thing.”
“Miss Wen, don’t pretend to be so noble. Why wouldn’t you do it? Once you had this done, Jiang Ning could no longer threaten your position. You were afraid that her return to the country would affect your relationship with Officer Ji, so you sent those thugs to disgrace her!”
The manager continued accusing her hysterically.
Jiang Ning began to cry.
Clutching Ji Shen’s sleeve, she sobbed pitifully, “Brother Shen, you have to stand up for me! I was almost—almost…”
Ji Shen’s gaze was cold and unreadable. “Wen Shuang, did you do this?”
Wen Shuang shook her head. “No!”
“But the evidence is conclusive,” the manager said. “Miss Wen, you can’t deny it.”
Wen Shuang repeated the same answer with unwavering resolve.
The manager stroked Jiang Ning’s head tenderly. “Our Ning Ning has worked incredibly hard abroad these past few years, but she has never suffered such humiliation! Officer Ji, what Miss Wen did is a crime, isn’t it? As a police officer, shouldn’t you arrest her immediately?”
Wen Shuang froze.
Then anger surged through her.
“I didn’t do anything like that! Why should I go to the police station?”
“Jiang Ning, describe what happened again in detail.” Ji Shen frowned.
“I had to go film, so I got out of the van. I never expected a group of people to surround me after I had walked only a short distance. They started touching me and even pinned me—pinned me to the ground…” Jiang Ning could not stop sobbing. “I asked them why they were doing it, and they said I had offended someone I should never have crossed. They said Wen Shuang had ordered them to do it!”
She played the recording again.

Wen Shuang’s entire body trembled faintly. She had never done such a thing.
Ji Shen asked her, “Do you have any evidence to prove that?”
“I was rehearsing at the theater this afternoon. My colleagues can testify for me.”
“You bribed those thugs in advance, then deliberately created an alibi for yourself.” The manager refused to let Wen Shuang go. “Officer Ji, we have already reported this to the police. According to proper procedure, shouldn’t you be taking Wen Shuang back for questioning now?”
Wen Shuang was overwhelmed with emotion.
“I said it wasn’t me! I’m sick of repeating myself!”
After saying that, Wen Shuang turned and walked away.
Ji Shen grabbed her by the wrist. “Wen Shuang, come back with me for the sake of clearing your name!”
He had originally brought Wen Shuang there so she could provide evidence. He had not expected her to repeat nothing but “It wasn’t me” from beginning to end. Clearly, she was too shocked to think straight.
Jiang Ning sobbed beside them. “Brother Shen, you have to stand up for me!”
Ji Shen said in a low voice, “Come back with me.”
Wen Shuang had clearly been hurt. Her watery eyes stared at the familiar face before her in disbelief, and for a moment, the pain in her heart was so sharp that she could hardly breathe.
“Ji Shen, you don’t believe me?”
After a long silence, Ji Shen slowly replied, “We have to let the evidence speak for itself.”
“I didn’t do anything like that!”
Wen Shuang did not want to go back to the police station.
That place was cramped and frightening. She had done nothing wrong—why should she be taken there?
Ji Shen still held tightly to her hand. “We’ll talk about everything once we get there. If you truly didn’t do it, I’ll see that justice is done.”
But if he intended to take her back for questioning, then it meant he did not trust her.
Wen Shuang had thought she would never feel hurt again.
Yet faced with this situation, her throat suddenly burned as though it had been cut by a knife. “Are you really going to take me to the station for questioning?”
Ji Shen’s eyes were dark and deep.
“I’m sorry.”
Wen Shuang said resolutely, “Fine. Let’s go. I didn’t do anything, so what do I have to fear?”
She walked out of the hospital room.
All the way there, she remained silent.
When they reached the police car, she suddenly said, “Ji Shen, let’s break up for good.”
