He suddenly leaned over her, and the air seemed to freeze for several seconds.

It had been a long time since they had been this close.

The familiar scent of a man drifted to the tip of Wen Shuang’s nose.

She instinctively shrank back. “We’re still on the road, Officer Ji. You’ve stopped right in the middle of the street, disrupting traffic. You’re a police officer, after all. Breaking traffic regulations like this isn’t very appropriate, is it?”

With a swift motion, Ji Shen took the little rabbit from her hand.

“Yes, Miss Wen is absolutely right. Safety comes first.”

He quickly hung the little rabbit beside the driver’s seat, where Wen Shuang could not reach it even if she tried to take it back.

“This little rabbit is my favorite ornament in the car—and the only one. I don’t want you throwing it away.”

With one hand on the steering wheel, the man merged back into traffic.

Wen Shuang bit her lip and turned her gaze aside.

Ji Shen’s words clearly carried a hidden meaning, but she pretended not to understand. All she wanted was for the journey to be shorter and to get home as quickly as possible.

“Where do you live?” Ji Shen asked, turning his head.

Wen Shuang gave him the name of the neighborhood.

The apartment she rented was not far from the theater. Under normal circumstances, it took only seven or eight minutes to get there by car.

More than twenty minutes later.

Wen Shuang stared at the unfamiliar roads around them and frowned. “Where are you going? This isn’t my home.”

“Did I take a wrong turn?” Ji Shen belatedly swiped across the navigation map. “Sorry. I’m not very familiar with this area. I drove in the opposite direction.”

“If you’re not familiar with it, why didn’t you turn on the navigation earlier?”

Strictly speaking, Ji Shen’s job required him to respond to calls throughout Jinghai District every day. He should have known even the most remote roads. Yet now he was claiming he was unfamiliar with the area.

Wen Shuang suspected he had done it on purpose.

“I thought I was especially good at recognizing roads and landmarks, so I assumed I could get there without navigation. I didn’t expect to make a mistake.” Ji Shen turned his head and curved his lips. “My apologies, Miss Wen.”

Wen Shuang opened the car door. “I’ll take a taxi home!”

“This place is practically in the middle of nowhere. If you get out now...” Ji Shen paused. “I can’t guarantee that I won’t have to respond to an emergency call later.”

Wen Shuang looked up. “See? You know perfectly well this place is in the middle of nowhere, yet you claim you can’t remember the way to my home. Officer Ji, you’re quite good at lying.”

Ji Shen raised an eyebrow and admitted it. “That’s right. I did it on purpose.”

Wen Shuang glared at him angrily.

Ji Shen continued, “Because I wanted to be alone with you. I was afraid that once I took you home, you’d disappear without a trace. Whenever I went to the hospital to see you, you were always clinging to that little green tea, Bai Yan, and I never had a chance to talk to you privately.”

“But I don’t want to spend time with you.”

Wen Shuang twisted the door handle, only to discover that some shameless person had already locked it from the inside.

“Ji Shen, what exactly are you trying to do?”

She could not help losing her temper.

The man lazily rested his arm on the steering wheel and opened the sunroof. “Shuangshuang, the moon is beautiful tonight. I want to look at the stars with you.”

Above them, the stars glittered across the mountaintop sky.

Wen Shuang had no desire whatsoever to look at them. Her voice was cold. “Officer Ji, you said you were taking me home, but then you drove me up into the mountains without my permission. That’s deception and coercion. If I call 110, I can report you.”

“I’ll take your report.”

“Shameless.”

“Wen Shuang, don’t be angry. I really do have something to say to you tonight.”

He suddenly leaned a little closer. His dark, obsidian eyes gleamed with sincerity.

“While you were gone, I missed you terribly. The time I spent with you was wonderful. It was my fault for not knowing how to treasure it. I was wrong. I should have kept my distance from Jiang Ning sooner. I understand everything now. As long as you come back, I’ll change—every single thing.”

Wen Shuang lifted her eyes. “Really?”

“I would never lie to you.”

After they broke up, Ji Shen began missing Wen Shuang every time he returned alone to their empty apartment.

At first, he thought he was simply not used to being alone.

Who could have imagined that after a month, his longing would not fade but instead grow even stronger?

Ji Shen had initially tried to win her back, but Wen Shuang had rejected him harshly at the bar. After his pride was wounded, the man no longer wanted to think about the matter.

Yet when they met again, he saw Bai Yan beside Wen Shuang. The thought that the two of them might one day get together and do all the things he and Wen Shuang had once done together was unbearable to him.

“Ji Shen, it’s a little late for you to say you’ll change now. We’ve been broken up for almost two months.” A mocking smile unconsciously tugged at Wen Shuang’s lips. “If you had been willing to say these things while we were still together, we wouldn’t have ended up like this.”

“Back then, I still didn’t understand. Shuangshuang, it was my fault.”

“You’ve always known that you were wrong. It’s just that I never left, so you felt entitled to keep making the same mistakes. Only after I walked away did you start feeling unwilling to let go. Ji Shen, you don’t actually like me. You’re simply being driven by your resentment at losing me.”

“It isn’t resentment. I really do like you. Shuangshuang, listen to me—”

“I don’t want to hear your explanations anymore!” Wen Shuang interrupted him impatiently. “Even if you want to explain, I no longer want to listen. All I have to say is that everything is over. What’s spilled cannot be gathered back up.”

“You’ve fallen for Bai Yan and want to be with him?” Ji Shen narrowed his eyes, sensing a crisis unlike anything he had ever experienced.

Wen Shuang fell silent for two or three seconds.

Seeing her expression, Ji Shen assumed she had already made up her mind.

“Don’t get together with Bai Yan. He isn’t suitable for you. He’s far from as simple as he appears.”

“He’s still better than you. At least Bai Yan hasn’t hurt me—so far. Besides, whatever choice I make, Officer Ji, is no longer any of your concern.”

Having lost patience, Wen Shuang leaned across the car and pressed the unlock button.

She twisted the handle and got out.

Ji Shen tried to stop her.

Wen Shuang called a Didi and insisted on leaving.

Ji Shen knew that if he provoked her any further, he might never get another chance to speak with her. Wen Shuang could be as gentle as a pool of water when she was calm.

But when her temper flared, she could be more than anyone could handle.

“Fine. Just remember to call me when you get home safely.”

Wen Shuang left without looking back.

The driver could tell from the rearview mirror that something was wrong between them.

“You had a fight with your boyfriend and got out halfway to take a taxi?”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

Just an ex—an ex who still refused to give up.

The driver realized he had overstepped and stopped asking questions.

After Wen Shuang got home, Ji Shen kept calling her.

“I’m home.”

“That’s good. I also—”

Wen Shuang hung up.

Ji Shen stood beneath Wen Shuang’s apartment building and remained there throughout the night.

Wen Shuang had slept poorly the night before. When she returned to the hospital the next day, Bai Yan noticed that the dark circles beneath her eyes were quite pronounced. She clearly had not rested well.

“Sister Shuang, you’ve lost weight. You really don’t need to bring me food tomorrow. Look, I’m already feeling much better now.” Bai Yan sounded concerned.

Wen Shuang smiled and said she was fine.

After she packed up the lunch containers, Bai Yan tugged at his collar. He had not showered for several days and felt that he smelled terrible.

Seeing this, Wen Shuang took the initiative to say, “I’ll help you wipe yourself down.”
