Our relationship has been discovered.
After seeing He Suosuo, Ji Shen finally remembered who she was. From childhood all the way through high school, He Suosuo had chased after him relentlessly. In theory, since they’d known each other for so long—even if Ji Shen wasn’t interested in her—there ought to have been some feelings between them. But He Suosuo was willful and domineering, never letting any girl who interacted with Ji Shen off the hook.
He recalled an incident in high school when he got close to a girl while working with the student council. He Suosuo had barged in and nearly disfigured the girl, even warning everyone else off. From that point on, Ji Shen felt nothing but irritation toward He Suosuo. Later, when her grades slipped and she failed to get into college, her family finally sent her abroad to study. Only then did Ji Shen feel some peace and quiet.
He didn’t expect that as soon as she returned, she’d start making trouble for his girlfriend again!
After Ji Shen snapped back at her, He Suosuo’s face turned even paler. “Shen, don’t you remember me? We were in the same class from kindergarten through high school! You even said I was cute back then!”
Ji Shen responded coolly, “I have absolutely no memory of that.”
Wen Shuang smiled slowly. “So this is the so-called childhood sweetheart Miss He was talking about.”
He Suosuo bit her lip. “Wen Shuang, you little vixen, don’t get cocky!”
Wen Shuang was speechless. Why did every woman who insulted her call her a vixen? Was it just because she was attractive?
“He Suosuo!” Ji Shen called her name with anger. “Please show more respect toward my girlfriend.”
He Suosuo’s face turned ashen. She never expected that after all these years apart, Ji Shen would treat her so coldly, without even sparing her a shred of dignity.
Laughter and snickering rose from the dancers nearby, especially Yao Qianqian, whose voice rang out above the rest. “Oh, I really thought she was the fiancée, but it turns out Officer Ji doesn’t even recognize you, and here you are, rushing to claim him. Miss He, you’ve got some nerve.”
The others joined in the laughter.
Wen Shuang didn’t want to stay and be gawked at like a monkey. She turned to leave.
Ji Shen followed her out, ignoring He Suosuo’s calls behind them as if she were invisible.
“Are you angry?” Ji Shen caught up to Wen Shuang in the parking garage, wrapping his arms around her waist.
She struggled a bit, but the man’s strength was too much. “No, I’m not!”
“Your tone says otherwise.” After being together for some time, Ji Shen had come to understand her little expressions. “There’s really nothing between me and her. At most, our parents put us together as kids to play. It might look like a childhood bond, but I never had any thoughts about her. I didn’t even know she was back in the country this time.”
He explained with utmost seriousness.
Wen Shuang looked down, then pounded his chest softly. “What a nuisance,” she muttered.
“What’s so troublesome?”
“It’s just that Officer Ji is too charming, and his admirers are fierce.” Wen Shuang traced little circles with her toes. “When she barged in today and told me she was your fiancée, I was really startled. I thought… I thought I was the other woman.”
“That’s absolutely impossible.” Ji Shen gripped her shoulders firmly. “Wen Shuang, I can assure you, I’ve never had a fiancée.”
“But what if someone else pops up claiming the same thing?”
“Then you can just call the police and report her for slander,” Ji Shen said, pulling her into his embrace.
Hearing his earnest and serious tone, Wen Shuang finally softened.
“Alright, Officer Ji.”
“That’s better,” he murmured, kissing her hair. “I don’t think much of He Suosuo either. She’s always bullied others, even used her fists. If she dares to trouble you again, tell me immediately.”
Wen Shuang buried her face in his sturdy chest.
“...Okay.”
“Officer Ji will protect you.”
As he held her, Ji Shen’s desire flared. He started guiding Wen Shuang toward the car. “It’s been a while since we tried something exciting in a parking garage.”
She pushed him away, feigning annoyance. “A people’s police officer behaving so improperly.”
“Police officers have feelings too, you know. What, does Miss Wen not allow it?”
Ji Shen shrugged off his jacket, then pressed his lips to hers.
…
After being humiliated by Ji Shen, He Suosuo was furious. She’d spent four years studying abroad, unable to stay by his side, but always imagined that after graduation she’d come back, date Ji Shen, and then marry him.
Just two days ago, a friend in their circle told her that Ji Shen had a new girlfriend. That was when He Suosuo rushed back! She thought Ji Shen would at least remember their past, but instead, he left her utterly disgraced.
Fuming, He Suosuo jabbed at her phone screen.
That evening, while Ji Shen was showering, he received a call from Mrs. Ji, telling him to come home immediately. Normally, unless something was wrong, Mrs. Ji wouldn’t call him back so late at night.
He finished his shower quickly, threw on a T-shirt, and told Wen Shuang he was heading home.
Wen Shuang was still at her vanity, applying a face mask. “Will you be back tonight?”
“I will,” Ji Shen said, kissing her on the forehead and picking up a trace of the moisturizer on his lips. “Go to bed early. No need to wait up.”
When he arrived at the old family house, the place was silent. Yet Ji Shen sensed this quiet was the calm before a storm.
A servant helped him change his shoes.
When he entered, Mrs. Ji was sitting on the sofa, her well-maintained face clouded with anger.
“What’s happened that you had to call me back in the middle of the night?” Ji Shen complied and sat down. “Did you lose too much at cards again and need more money?”
Mrs. Ji stared at him. “A-Shen, you’ve been lying to me!”
“What did I lie about?”
“So you never dated that girl from the Chen family—you were just pretending for my sake? Meanwhile, you’ve been seeing some dancer behind my back!”
So she’d found out tonight and called him home because of it.
“Who told you this?” Ji Shen asked.
“Never mind who told me! Just admit it—are you or are you not involved with that dancer?”
“I am,” Ji Shen admitted directly. “I’ve started a relationship recently.”
“Oh, so you dare to lie to me! I thought you and the Chen girl were nearly settled, but it was all fake! If no one had told me tonight, I’d still be left in the dark!” Mrs. Ji’s anger was palpable.
But Ji Shen remained calm. “What’s wrong with dating someone? It’s not a big deal. No need to be so upset. Besides, I never liked the Chen girl, and she didn’t like me either. The only reason we pretended was because you parents kept forcing us into blind dates. She and I agreed to keep it secret for a while.”
Mrs. Ji fumed, “That’s outright deception! A-Shen, no matter what you say, you must break up with that dancer immediately!”
Ji Shen finally looked up, and with unwavering certainty, declared, “Impossible.”
