Chapter 124: The Female Zombie

That voice was exactly the same as a zombie’s! No—it had to be a zombie! Although Qin Yu was surprised, she remained silent, only tightening her grip on Qing Li’s hand slightly, sensing that the zombie inside was no ordinary one.
Nangong Yao and Shi walked ahead, unaware of what was happening behind. Nangong Yao paused at the door, glanced back at Qin Yu, who looked somewhat stiff, and then said to Shi, “Tsk tsk, looks like she’s lost her mind!”
Shi shot him a glance, then stepped forward to open the door. Without caring about others’ reactions, he was the first to enter the room.
Nangong Yao followed without hesitation. Seeing Nangong Yao’s unwavering steps, a complex look flashed in Qin Yu’s eyes as she also led Qing Li inside.
Inside, there was a female zombie covered in decayed flesh, baring sharp teeth. Unknown fluids dripped from her mouth onto the floor, quickly forming a disgusting puddle. Her hands and feet were tightly shackled, restraining any movement.
She seemed furious about her situation, struggling constantly. When she caught unfamiliar scents, her struggles intensified. But soon, she stopped, sensing a familiar presence nearby.
She growled softly, turning her head toward Shi. Strangely, when Shi approached with the corpse of a mutated animal, she did not immediately snatch the food but tilted her head, as if puzzled about who he was.
Ignoring the zombie’s reaction, Shi deftly cut a piece of meat with his dagger and held it to her mouth.
The female zombie sniffed it, then turned her head away in disgust. Seeing this, Shi’s expression hardened as he said coldly, “Eat now!” His aura darkened slightly.
The zombie seemed to sense the man’s anger and reluctantly swallowed the mutated meat.
Shi nodded, satisfied with her compliance. He continued feeding her piece by piece until he finished the entire wild chicken he was holding.
Meanwhile, Qin Yu and Qing Li were called aside by Nangong Yao to sit and watch this feeding spectacle.
The three watched as Shi, once cold and unfeeling, looked at the decaying female zombie with deep affection. Occasionally, he would swipe away drool about to fall from her mouth.

Although Nangong Yao had roughly guessed the situation, facing it firsthand still made him uneasy. Anyone would feel awkward seeing such a stark contrast! Especially since this person had once been a close friend.
Qin Yu, observing the interaction between Shi and the female zombie, guessed that the zombie must be very important to Shi—so important that he dared to defy the whole world by keeping a despised zombie in the base.
Looking at the zombie, Qin Yu sensed it had some level of awareness. Yet, this made her even more puzzled. She felt a strong aura from the zombie, which should indicate a high-level zombie, but why was its flesh still rotting?
She remembered encountering third- and fourth-level zombies whose skin was mostly intact. Could her perception be wrong?
Shaking her head, Qin Yu quickly dismissed that thought. If her intuition was correct, then the problem must lie with this zombie. Thinking this, her gaze toward the zombie deepened.
Qing Li had only glanced briefly at the scene before turning his attention to Qin Yu. Watching his beloved frown and look puzzled, he found her irresistibly adorable—he just wanted to throw himself at her.
Shi finally calmed the female zombie, who stopped her wild growling and stared blankly at Shi, oddly comical in her expression.
Shi sighed slightly, then approached Qin Yu and asked, “She’s like this already. Is there any way to save her?”
Qin Yu thought: I don’t know anything! Why suddenly ask me if she can be saved? Didn’t Nangong Yao say he could save her?
Qin Yu looked at Nangong Yao, who quickly avoided her gaze. He cleared his throat and said, “I didn’t realize it was this serious before I came! By the way, what’s the story with her? Why is she in such a state? She’s infected with the zombie toxin? But isn’t she supposed to be a Drought Specter?”
Shi glanced at the female zombie who turned her head with his movement, sighed, and said, “It’s my fault.”
Nangong Yao asked, “What exactly happened?”
“Two months ago, she and I woke up in a cave at the same time. I didn’t remember anything then, so I curiously asked why we were there. Although she knew, she didn’t say. She only told me we were lovers, meant to be together forever.
I believed her because my heart told me it was true.” Shi hadn’t finished when Nangong Yao interrupted.

“Who wants to hear your sappy love story? Get to the point!” Nangong Yao snapped. “Just to torment me! Hundreds of years ago and now still tormenting me! Hmph! Haven’t even found him yet! Once I do, I’ll make you pay!”
Shi pursed his lips and glanced at Nangong Yao before continuing, “That day, we killed many zombies in a small mountain village and were exhausted, so we wanted to rest there. Around midnight, I was ambushed by a third-level zombie. She saved me, saying as a Drought Specter she shouldn’t get infected with that so-called zombie toxin, but the next day, I was awakened by her howling. I couldn’t let her go, so I kept her by my side, trying to train her. That’s how she became like this. Sigh.”
Nangong Yao frowned. “She was right. As the King of Zombies, a Drought Specter wouldn’t be infected by that toxin. Something else must have caused this.”
“I remember she said her strength dropped sharply after waking up. Could that be it?” Shi asked uncertainly.
“Impossible! Even if her strength dropped, the innate suppression in her body wouldn’t vanish. There must be another cause. Think carefully!” Nangong Yao urged.
Shi could only lower his head helplessly, lost in thought.
Qin Yu, overhearing their conversation, asked, “You two knew each other before?”
Nangong Yao smirked. “Of course! Back in the day—”
“Ah! I remember now!” Shi suddenly interrupted Nangong Yao excitedly.
“What did you remember? Tell me!” Nangong Yao said.
“That day—”
