At the mention of Boss Di Xin, Jin Dabao’s mood sank. It sniffed, sighed, and finally said, “In short, I only sensed its presence. Other than that, I know nothing.”

The others understood that they would get no more information from Jin Dabao. Still, they had learned at least one thing: last night’s abnormal events were probably connected to Shui Duoduo—and Shui Duoduo had most likely gained sentience as well!

Qin Yu’s gaze darkened. She thought of Little Greenie. She remembered that what she had received from Little Red had been the Wood Spirit, yet that crystal had clearly never developed a consciousness. Could the states of the Five Spirits be different?

With that thought, Qin Yu glanced at Jin Dabao, who was curled up in Mu Rongyi’s arms, and asked, “Jin Dabao, are all the Five Spirits like you?”

Jin Dabao immediately sprang up, indignant. “Life Spirit! Let me tell you something! Don’t think that just because we respect you, you can spout nonsense! Among the Five Spirits, I’m obviously the coolest and the most beautiful! Hmph!”

Qin Yu’s lips twitched. Relenting, she said, “Yes, yes, you’re the coolest and the most beautiful. But I think you misunderstood me. I meant to ask whether all five of you possess your own consciousness.”

Jin Dabao snorted, then curled back into Mu Rongyi’s arms and said gloomily, “I don’t know. We haven’t seen one another for several thousand years! I only developed a clear consciousness a few years after we were separated. Back then, Boss Di Xin kept us by his side and named us according to our attributes. I had no consciousness at the time, but because Boss Di Xin gave me an inheritance, once I developed one, I learned both my own name and theirs.

“Later, I don’t know what happened. Boss Di Xin sealed away most of our power and sent us to different parts of the world. Over the past several thousand years, Boss Di Xin actually summoned us once. But before we could reunite, his command vanished. So, to this day, we still haven’t seen one another.”

Qin Yu froze. So the Five Spirits did not all possess consciousness. That would explain why the Wood Spirit was merely a crystal.

After finishing, Jin Dabao lowered its head slightly. Then it slowly flew over to Qin Yu and sat down on her shoulder.

“Life Spirit,” it said, “I am the leader of the Five Spirits. Back then, Boss Di Xin gave me something resembling an inheritance. When I developed my own consciousness, I received part of that inheritance. It mentioned your existence.”

Qin Yu was stunned. She lifted Jin Dabao from her shoulder and held it before her eyes, staring straight at it.

“What did it say about me?”

Jin Dabao looked at the person before it and suddenly seemed to lose its soul. It stared blankly without speaking, its two eyes blinking repeatedly.

Qin Yu watched the silent Jin Dabao and pressed her lips together. What was that supposed to mean?

“When the Five Spirits reunite, Di Xin shall lead them. Of the Life Spirit and the Dark Spirit, one shall ascend.”

Jin Dabao suddenly spoke while everyone was still bewildered.

“Do you mean that when the Five Spirits and Di Xin reunite one day, either the Life Spirit or the Dark Spirit will perish?” Qin Yu asked.

Jin Dabao shook its head and said gloomily, “I don’t know. I’ve waited for several thousand years and never seen the other four spirits. I only met the Life Spirit today. As for the Dark Spirit, that fellow is treacherous and elusive, so it’s even harder to find. I’ve always thought Boss Di Xin was merely speaking offhand. After all, my inheritance contains plenty of strange and nonsensical things.”

Qin Yu drew a deep breath. She knew that Di Xin could not have said such a thing casually. Perhaps he had foreseen that one day this world would be plunged into a great war.

Jin Dabao looked at the Life Spirit before it, tilted its head, and thought for a moment before speaking. “Life Spirit, you’re so strange! How can you be alone? Even after acknowledging a master, the Life Spirit should still have an independent physical form of its own. Why can’t I sense your source essence?”

Qin Yu shook her head and smiled bitterly. “I don’t know either. I’ve even begun to doubt whether I’m truly the Life Spirit you’re talking about.”

Jin Dabao studied Qin Yu once more, then nodded firmly. “You are definitely the Life Spirit! As for why you’ve become like this, something must have gone wrong along the way. But still… you’re really weak! How can you be this weak? Boss Di Xin sealed away most of my power, and even now, I could kill you with a single finger.”

Qin Yu nodded helplessly and asked casually, “Then does Jin Dabao know how I can increase my strength?”

Jin Dabao puffed out its chest and declared proudly, “Who do you think I am? Of course I know!”

Qin Yu had not expected anything at all. She had not imagined that such a pleasant surprise would fall into her lap. Smiling, she asked, “Oh? What is it?”

“Obviously, you must find the Dark Spirit and unlock the inheritance!” Jin Dabao replied.

“The Dark Spirit? The inheritance?” Qin Yu asked.

“That’s right! The Life Spirit and the Dark Spirit were originally one. I heard that those old bald monks sealed away the inheritance granted to you by the Heavenly Dao. The seal can only be lifted when the two of you sincerely live together in harmony. But think about it: one exists to save all living beings, while the other exists to bring ruin upon them. How could you possibly live in true harmony? Those so-called saints simply don’t want the two of you to appear and disrupt their control over the world.”

Qin Yu felt an indescribable discomfort upon hearing this. She asked again, “Why do you say that?”

Jin Dabao paused, then answered as though it were obvious. “Because that is simply the truth! Since ancient times, this world has belonged to one of two factions: the realm ruled by those old bald monks, or the realm ruled by Boss Di Xin. But after something happened to Boss Di Xin, the world fell into the hands of those so-called saints. They call themselves saints, but in truth, they dream of defying the Heavenly Dao one day. The Heavenly Dao is no easy opponent. Still, I have to admit, those old bald monks are quite capable. That’s why the Heavenly Dao sent the two of you here to punish them. It’s just a pity…”

“A pity what?” Nangong Yao, who had remained silent nearby until then, suddenly asked.

Jin Dabao paid no attention to who had spoken and continued, “The Life Spirit and the Dark Spirit were originally supposed to have time to mature. But one of those old bald monks actually glimpsed a secret of heaven, and so he spread the rumor that whoever obtained the Life Spirit and the Dark Spirit would gain dominion over the world. Later, I don’t know what happened, but the two spirits disappeared. From then on, those so-called immortals continued ruling this world.”

“Heh… So this is the truth? Hahahaha…”

Nangong Yao suddenly began to laugh under his breath. Gradually, the laughter grew louder and louder.

He threw back his head and laughed with startling abandon. Yet everyone still saw a tear slowly gather at the corner of his eye before tracing a path down his cheek.
