Chapter 160: On the Road

“Morning, Yu,” Zhao Meng called brightly, her voice filling the entire vehicle.
Qin Yu lazily replied, “Morning, Meng.”
Zhao Meng smiled, then took some food from the trunk and handed it to Qin Yu. Qin Yu accepted it and began eating in earnest.
Compared with this food, Qin Yu would much rather have taken something hot and freshly cooked from her personal space. But to avoid arousing suspicion, she could only endure it for now.
Just then, Feng Ji returned from keeping watch. He climbed swiftly into the vehicle, took the food Zhao Meng handed him, and began eating.
“Qin Yu, do you know Zhang Yang?” Feng Ji asked after finishing his food.
Qin Yu paused, then nodded. “I do. We’ve crossed paths several times. What happened to him?”
Feng Ji shook his head. “Nothing. I just find it strange. He’s with the military, and his position isn’t low. I don’t know why he accepted this mission. Besides, he’s always operated as part of a team, yet this time he’s acting alone. I’m afraid there may be more to this.”
Qin Yu pursed her lips. “That’s true. Feng Fei is merely a spatial ability user, and judging from the fluctuations of her energy, she should only be at the advanced level of Tier Two. Why would they bring a spatial ability user on a mission to the city? Is it simply because they’re worried about running out of food, or is there some other reason?”
“We’re already here, so there’s nothing we can do about it now. We’ll deal with whatever comes our way,” Zhao Meng said helplessly.
Qin Yu and Feng Ji nodded. For the moment, that was indeed all they could do.
“All right, let’s get moving! We need to reach the city as quickly as possible!” Zhao Meng said, gripping the steering wheel.
Qin Yu nodded. “Let’s go.”
“Got it!”
Zhao Meng started the engine and followed Xue Qi’s group ahead of them.
What sort of scenery would await them up ahead?
The road Qin Yu and the others had chosen was the highway they had once used to reach the city. Apart from the zombies surrounding them, the road itself remained intact, with no collapsed sections along the way.

Perhaps the apocalypse had arrived too suddenly. They still passed many vehicles along the way, though most of what had been inside them was already gone. The survivors must have taken it.
As far as Qin Yu and the others were concerned, however, they had no interest in anything left inside the vehicles. Even if there had been food, it was probably already expired or rotten.
The entire morning passed as they slaughtered zombies.
Zhao Meng wiped the sweat from her forehead and turned toward Xia Cheng. “Honey, are you still holding up?”
Xia Cheng nodded. “I’m not as weak as you think!”
Zhao Meng stuck out her tongue playfully. “You’ve been helping Qing Li with her treatments these past few days. You’ve worked so hard, and I was worried you might not be able to keep going!”
Xia Cheng smiled. “All right, I’m fine. Just concentrate on driving, okay?”
Zhao Meng nodded and turned back to focus on the road.
Inside the vehicle, Feng Ji leaned against one side and fell asleep. Qin Yu and Xia Cheng, meanwhile, used their abilities to eliminate the zombies that occasionally sprang out at them.
In the other vehicle, Ouyang Jue and the others were also getting along quite well.
Well, to be precise, Xue Qi was the only one talking nonstop while the others listened.
Xue Qi was undeniably energetic. From the moment he woke that morning, his mouth had hardly stopped moving. Of course, he was also quite capable—at the very least, he could chat away while killing zombies at the same time.
The atmosphere in the other two vehicles was considerably less pleasant.
Zhang Ke’s vehicle was silent, broken only by the sounds of occasional attacks against zombies.
In Zhang Yang’s vehicle, Li Jiao was driving while Zhang Yang rested after keeping watch through the night. Unfortunately, someone was determined not to let him sleep peacefully.
Feng Fei kept asking for one thing after another. Whenever a zombie suddenly appeared, she put on an expression of helpless fragility and refused to attack. As a result, Zhang Yang’s vehicle suffered the heaviest assault from the zombies.
In the end, Zhang Yang could take no more. He threatened to throw Feng Fei out of the vehicle if she did not quiet down. Only then did she finally fall silent.
Feng Fei bit her lip and dug her fingernails into her palm. The sharp pain brought her back from her resentment.
Looking at the marks in her palm, she placed the blame squarely on Qin Yu.
Qin Yu was entirely innocent in this matter. Still, some people’s thought processes were truly impossible to understand.
And so they continued along the broad, level road, some cheerful and others miserable, until their good fortune finally ran out.
Ahead of them, the road had collapsed. The damage was so severe that the vehicles could not pass at all.
When Hu Ke saw the situation, he immediately decided to take the side road. According to the map, that road would lead them through to a small town not far from the city. From there, a level highway would take them to the city.

Fortunately, although it was only a side road, it was still wide enough for a single vehicle to pass. The road was far from smooth, but at least it was not impassable. That counted as a blessing amid misfortune.
The trouble was that the road passed through many villages, and those villages were likely filled with zombies. Few survivors would have gone there, after all.
By then, Xia Cheng had taken over the driving in Qin Yu’s vehicle. Zhao Meng sat in the passenger seat, jolting up and down with every bump, her face somewhat pale.
As he drove, Xia Cheng asked, “Wife, are you all right? I’m driving as steadily as I can, but this road is truly terrible. There are potholes everywhere.”
Zhao Meng waved a hand weakly. “I’m fine. Just keep driving.”
Seeing how pale Zhao Meng was, Qin Yu took some motion-sickness medicine from her personal space and gave it to her. Zhao Meng felt somewhat better after taking it.
Feng Ji was jolted awake as well. There was no way anyone could sleep under these conditions. With a dark expression, he stared out the window, though no one knew what he was looking at—or what he was thinking.
Feng Fei was suffering just as badly in the other vehicle. Her face pale, she looked toward Zhang Yang, hoping to win his sympathy. To her surprise, Zhang Yang simply kept his eyes closed and did not even look at her.
Feng Fei felt her insides churning violently. At last, she could not hold it in any longer and vomited.
The vehicle was instantly filled with a foul, nauseating stench.
Without making a sound, Zhang Yang shifted farther to one side. Feng Fei was so furious that she nearly vomited again.
Afterward, she felt somewhat better, though the smell inside the vehicle was truly unbearable.
She bit her lip and called out to Li Jiao, “Stop! Stop! Pull over, quickly!”
Li Jiao slammed on the brakes and looked toward Feng Fei. Because he had stopped, Qin Yu’s vehicle and Ouyang Jue’s vehicle behind them stopped as well. When Hu Ke saw that the vehicles ahead had halted, he brought his own vehicle to a stop too, then got out to see what had happened.
Feng Fei was leaning against the vehicle door, looking weak and fragile. When she saw Qin Yu getting out of the vehicle behind them, the corners of her lips lifted into a pale, feeble smile.
She staggered forward a couple of steps, then looked at Qin Yu with tears glimmering in her eyes.
“Elder Sister Qin.”
