Volume One, Chapter 141: Madness

Only an hour passed between the moment Chu Xingzhi learned that he had a child and the moment he lost that child.
He sat on a chair in the corridor, completely dazed.
It was true that he had never loved Lin Tiange, nor had he ever considered having children with any woman other than Song Qingyu.
Yet when the child had suddenly appeared and then suddenly vanished, the loss still dealt him a considerable blow.
Pei Jingmo cast Chu Xingzhi a cool glance before entering the hospital room.
Lin Tiange lay on the bed, her face as pale as paper. Her eyes were closed, and she looked utterly haggard and weak.
“There is no need to keep pretending. Chu Xingzhi will not come to see you.”
Lin Tiange, who had been feigning sleep, recognized the cold, ominous voice. The overwhelming pressure in it made her afraid to continue pretending.
She slowly opened her eyes and saw the man she could never hope to reach.
“President Gu…”
She tried to sit up and get out of bed, but Pei Jingmo said indifferently, “You just suffered a miscarriage. You needn’t get out of bed. Rest properly.”
Lin Tiange’s heart began to race. She had never imagined that Gu Yuandong would come to see her in person.
This was completely beyond her expectations. Rolling her eyes slightly, she struck first.
“Did President Gu come because of Miss Sheng?”
Pei Jingmo looked at the woman on the bed. “What do you think?”
Although the two of them had never had any dealings, the man’s gaze was terrifying, as though it could see straight through her.
Under such pressure, Lin Tiange only wanted to send him away as quickly as possible.
“President Gu, you needn’t worry. I will not pursue the matter concerning the child. Miss Sheng is President Chu’s fiancée. When she saw that I was carrying President Chu’s child, she pushed me down the stairs in a fit of anger and impulse. I can understand.”
Pei Jingmo raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t expect Miss Lin to be so magnanimous.”
Lin Tiange lowered her eyes, looking deeply sorrowful. Several tears spilled from them.
“This was all my fault. After learning that I was pregnant, I should never have foolishly hoped to keep the child. In the end, I was the one who caused his death.”
Apart from Song Qingyu and Gu Chenxi, Pei Jingmo had little patience for any woman.

“Miss Lin is not wrong about that. I am merely curious. Why did you go to such lengths to frame Sheng Yuru for causing your miscarriage?”
Lin Tiange’s heart lurched, and her hand instinctively clenched the blanket.
She composed herself and looked up at the man across from her in disbelief.
“President Gu, I am only a waitress at Tianxing Hotel. I had no idea where Young Master Fu would be holding his birthday party, much less that Miss Sheng would attend. How could I have plotted against her?”
There was not the slightest expression on Pei Jingmo’s face beneath his mask.
“Your home is near Yunding Club, and Fu Linhan often goes there for entertainment. He books the venue for his birthday party half a month in advance. It would not have been difficult for you to find that out.”
“As for Sheng Yuru, the Chu Group had only just begun to stabilize after its recent crisis. Chu Xingzhi would never pass up an opportunity to grow closer to Fu Linhan and me. He would certainly have asked Sheng Yuru to accompany him.”
In the past, Lin Tiange had only heard others speak of how frightening the heir was.
Today, she had experienced it for herself.
“I know I cannot afford to offend the Gu family or the Sheng family. I have already said that I will not pursue this matter, so why are you still trying to make me shoulder such a grave accusation?”
Lin Tiange wept with heartbreaking beauty.
“If President Gu suspects that I framed Miss Sheng, shouldn’t you at least produce some evidence?”
Pei Jingmo smiled faintly.
“You are considerably cleverer than Sheng Yuru. You deliberately left the corridor’s surveillance intact while destroying the camera at the stairwell, all so that everyone would believe Sheng Yuru had pushed you down the stairs.”
Lin Tiange continued to struggle.
“When someone is determined to accuse you, what crime cannot be found?”
“You should know that anything a person does leaves traces. Whether you are truly innocent or not, I will eventually uncover the truth. It is only a matter of time.”
Lin Tiange gritted her teeth. At last, a trace of panic appeared on her face. Indeed, if Gu Yuandong resolved to investigate, her little tricks would not withstand scrutiny.
Rather than be prosecuted by Gu Yuandong for framing someone, she might as well come clean now.
“If President Gu has already guessed the truth, why haven’t you reported me to the police? Why come to me instead?”
“I already told you. You went through so much trouble to become pregnant with Chu Xingzhi’s child, yet instead of giving birth to it and using it to threaten him, you framed Sheng Yuru for causing the miscarriage and did not even demand compensation. What was your purpose?”
Before Lin Tiange could answer, Pei Jingmo continued, “You wanted to destroy the relationship between Chu Xingzhi and Sheng Yuru. You wanted to marry Chu Xingzhi?”
Lin Tiange fell silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed.
“That’s right. Chu Xingzhi is my objective. But you are mistaken about one thing. There is no love between Chu Xingzhi and Sheng Yuru. At most, it is Sheng Yuru’s one-sided affection. Chu Xingzhi does not love her at all. The woman he loves is his former fiancée, Song Qingyu.”
Pei Jingmo’s expression darkened at once.

“I once considered using the child to force Chu Xingzhi to marry me. But I know him well. If he learned that I was pregnant with his child, he would definitely make me get rid of it. He would also think that I had been plotting against him all along and would despise me even more.”
Since they had come this far, Lin Tiange no longer saw any need to hide the truth.
“If I insisted on giving birth to the child, even if Chu Xingzhi reluctantly accepted it, he would never accept me. So there was no reason to keep the child.”
“Chu Xingzhi never liked Sheng Yuru in the first place. At present, the two of them are merely using each other. Although Chu Xingzhi does not like me, the child I carried truly was his. Since the child was lost while in Sheng Yuru’s hands, he would feel guilty toward me even if he wanted to kill me. He would hate Sheng Yuru even more. What I wanted was Chu Xingzhi’s guilt.”
Lin Tiange knew very well that, given her family background and social standing, she could never make Chu Xingzhi marry her.
If she wanted Chu Xingzhi, she would have to take a dangerous, unconventional path and gradually break him down.
“Chu Xingzhi looks domineering on the surface, but he is actually fragile inside. Think about it. On one side is an unreasonable heiress who does not understand him and constantly quarrels with him out of jealousy. On the other is a woman who is understanding, considerate in every way, loves him, and even inspires his guilt. Whom do you think he will ultimately choose?”
As though she had thought of something, Lin Tiange let out a laugh.
“Of course, his mother, Wu Yijun, is also my greatest ally. The more she urges Chu Xingzhi to marry Sheng Yuru, the more resentful he will become. Whether out of anger or impulse, he will marry me in the end.”
By the time Lin Tiange finished speaking, her expression had twisted into something almost feverish and deranged.
Pei Jingmo stared coldly at her. The woman before him was ambitious and calculating. No wonder neither Song Qingyu nor Sheng Yuru had been able to defeat her.
“You are certainly honest. But do not forget that I am Sheng Yuru’s cousin.”
Lin Tiange smiled.
“Yes. Precisely because of that, you should not want to see your cousin marry a man who does not love her and spend her entire life in misery, should you?”
“You think Chu Xingzhi will fall in love with you?”
Lin Tiange shook her head with a smile.
“I do not care whether he loves me. I only want to become Mrs. Chu.”
From beginning to end, she had only ever had one goal: the status of Mrs. Chu.
“I do not care whom you want to become. But I will not allow anything like what happened today to happen again.”
Lin Tiange had not expected Pei Jingmo to let her off so easily. She immediately nodded.
“I promise.”
