With one hand inconvenient, Jiang Fan went to the dumpling shop to call Zhang Chunge, preparing to take Zhao Sixi to the patch of weeds where he first met Zhang Chunge and Zhang Xiaoye—there was quiet there.

Passing by the fruit store, Jiang Fan saw Wang Wenyu and Xiao Yuxin sitting outside. Jiang Fan nodded in a friendly manner to greet them.

Xiao Yuxin teased Wang Wenyu, "Your man is stirring up trouble again, aren’t you going to keep an eye on him?"

Wang Wenyu feigned annoyance, "It’s probably about the internal introduction fees at Dafeng. He just told me last night—they don’t want those people to have a peaceful New Year, and now it’s already started. If he doesn’t cause some trouble every day, he doesn’t know what to do with his hands and feet. I can’t control him."

Zhao Sixi grew nervous when Jiang Fan brought him to such a desolate place and said, "Deputy Manager Jiang: I only bumped into you a bit, I really didn’t offend you!"

Jiang Fan glanced at him disdainfully and said, "You dismissed my friend without reason, and you dare say you didn’t offend me?"

Based on what Amy had said, her sewing machine line had recruited two mechanics in a month, neither lasted half a month. Jiang Fan used this as a pretext to claim the dismissed workers were his friends, trying to trace clues from Zhao Sixi.

There were too many dismissals, and Zhao Sixi didn’t know who Jiang Fan meant. He put on an innocent face and defended himself: "Deputy Manager Jiang, you’re also a factory cadre, you know our factory’s rules. If I don’t deal with my subordinates’ mistakes, the factory will give me trouble."

Though he only knew that Zhao Sixi had dismissed mechanics from Amy’s line within the month, Dafeng had dozens of sewing lines and hundreds of mechanics. Jiang Fan suspected similar positions existed on other lines.

Jiang Fan slapped him on the head and testily said, "Your damn ‘rules’—dismissing so many people in a month, and you still blame the rules."

After cursing, Jiang Fan turned to Zhang Chunge, "Use this bastard to practice your moves, or he won’t behave."

Just as Jiang Fan finished speaking, Zhang Chunge kicked Zhao Sixi in the head, his fist ready to land on his face again.

Jiang Fan mockingly said, "Others are cadres; slapping their faces would hurt their image, so better to do it somewhere out of sight."

Seeing Jiang Fan was about to get serious, Zhao Sixi immediately knelt before him, clutching his leg and begging, "Deputy Manager Jiang, I was wrong. Your friend is that one. He can come back to work right now, and I’ll refund the introduction fee."

Jiang Fan pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it, blowing smoke directly into Zhao Sixi’s face, "We’ll talk about the introduction fees later. Right now, I want to know who’s backing you that makes so many cadres fear you."

"Tell me honestly, and I won’t hit you anymore. If you dare hide anything, I won’t bother keeping up the pretense that you’re a cadre—I’ll beat you until you’re too ashamed to show your face."

After Zhao Sixi’s confession, Jiang Fan learned many of the factory’s dark secrets.

Gou Biao and Zhu Bing were not only Chen Anlong’s henchmen but also acted as pimps, helping the lecherous Taiwanese deputy managers find women, thus getting close to them.

One deputy manager was purely lecherous—he was easy to please as long as he got introduced to beautiful women. The other was both lecherous and greedy, wanting to take credit for the factory’s achievements—Deputy Manager Li.

Deputy Manager Li was in charge of production schedules. Besides sharing in the beauty and introduction fees, he also demanded a monthly stack of signed penalty slips as merit from Chen Anlong. He ordered Gou Biao and Zhu Bing to win over other cadres and fine employees more often.

Flattering Chen Anlong cemented their positions in the factory. Acting as pimps to curry favor with the two deputy managers made things more convenient.

With the backing of the boss and top officials, Gou Biao and Zhu Bing had recruited many section chiefs, and some production managers even obeyed their commands.

Each month, they assigned these recruited chiefs and managers the task of collecting fines, also demanding one or two job slots be freed up monthly. Of the collected introduction fees, Zhu Bing, Gou Biao, and the dismissal management each took 30%, with the remaining 10% going to Liu Xingyu—except Gou Biao never gave his share to him.

The HR department, guarded by Liu Xingyu, generally required introduction fees for most hires except for a few high-ranking individuals. Most of these fees ended up in Gou Biao and Zhu Bing’s pockets.

The fees varied, but men’s introduction fees were especially generous, which made Zhao Sixi a favorite in Gou Biao and Zhu Bing’s eyes.

Recently, Zhu Bing thought Jiang Fan’s crackdown was weakening, so some cadres he recruited, unwilling to earn dirty money, left the chain. Though Gou Biao was also hit, he still held his position, so most cadres dared not offend him.

Now, Gou Biao led this chain, with Zhu Bing merely following his lead and getting scraps.

Because Zhu Bing lost power and some cadres left, Deputy Manager Li’s penalty achievements and income decreased, which was why he disliked Jiang Fan.

Zhao Sixi wasn’t a key player in this chain, only following Gou Biao’s orders and wasn’t fully informed.

After hearing this, Jiang Fan asked, "Who is the other deputy manager? Which women did those bastards introduce to these two Taiwanese lechers?"

Zhao Sixi hurriedly shook his head, "I only heard Team Leader Gou joke once; he called him the ‘lecherous deputy manager.’ I don’t know who he really is.

I’m just a listener. As for which women were introduced, I was never told. I was only told to inspect the mechanics at various posts and, if I saw any attractive women, to register their names and departments and report them."

Jiang Fan continued pressing, asking how much dirty money Zhao Sixi himself had taken.

Zhao Sixi thought for a long moment and said, "Usually, I freed up two positions a month. Since the New Year was coming, in January I freed up three."

Seeing he could not pry out more valuable information, Jiang Fan punched Zhao Sixi’s face and said, "You’re really worthless—taking introduction fees and dismissing others on flimsy excuses, reusing positions multiple times."

Zhao Sixi spat out a mouthful of blood and sputum, whining, "You said if I confessed, you wouldn’t hit me?"

The more Jiang Fan learned, the angrier he grew. Gritting his teeth, he said, "Do you think I owe you any courtesy?"

Zhang Chunge suddenly piped up, "Brother Fan, didn’t you say to take care of the cadres’ faces?"

Jiang Fan shot him a glare, "No need now. Hit him a few more times so he can’t show his face for ten or fifteen days. He’s pocketed so much dirty money; he shouldn’t get off so cheap."

Amid Zhao Sixi’s anguished screams, Jiang Fan began considering where to start solving this problem.

Some evidence could easily topple Zhu Bing and Gou Biao and force them out of the factory, but that was not Jiang Fan’s goal. He planned to find those who paid introduction fees, to make Zhu Bing, Gou Biao, and even Deputy Manager Li cough up the dirty money they had swallowed.
