Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Investiture of the Gods List!
Seeing Jiang Yuan’s no-deal-no-pay attitude, Shen Gongbao understood at once that he would have to show some sincerity if he wanted Jiang Yuan to take cooperation seriously.
This was far beyond his expectations. He had originally thought that, as a Grand Luo Golden Immortal, he would at least be treated with respect upon arriving in Great Shang.
He had never expected such a reception.
A trace of hesitation flickered across Shen Gongbao’s face, but in the end he said firmly, “Does Your Majesty know that the God-Conferring Register actually exists in two copies?”
Jiang Yuan was momentarily stunned by the news. He truly had not known that.
“Oh?” Jiang Yuan’s expression turned interested.
Seeing that reaction, Shen Gongbao finally breathed easier. At last, it seemed, he had something that could draw the attention of the Human Sovereign.
At last, he knew a piece of news the Human Sovereign did not.
“Go on,” Jiang Yuan said.
Shen Gongbao recovered a measure of dignity at once, and in a much lighter mood he said, “Your Majesty may not know this, but the God-Conferring Register was forged through the combined efforts of several sages.”
“It can absorb the fortune of the Human Sovereign and thereby confer rightful godhood.”
Jiang Yuan gave a faint nod. These hidden details he already knew. After conferring so many official gods, it would be strange if the Human Sovereign’s fortune were not drained dry.
In the future, once the gods named on the God-Conferring Register accepted and divided that fortune, they could openly replace the Human Sovereign in ruling over humanity, while also steadily increasing their own power through the faith of the human race.
Only someone as cunning as Primordial Heavenly Lord could come up with such a one-stroke, two-gain scheme.
They got rich off it, while I’m the one left with nothing.
Jiang Yuan grumbled inwardly.
After a brief pause, Shen Gongbao continued, “Originally, there was only one God-Conferring Register. Even for sages, forging such an item was no simple matter, since it concerns the fortune of the Human Sovereign, and none could afford to be careless.”
“However, I can tell Your Majesty plainly that the first God-Conferring Register is in my hands.” Shen Gongbao spoke with pride.
“How did you get it?” Jiang Yuan asked with curiosity.
“To tell Your Majesty the truth, I long ago grew sick of the treatment I received on Kunlun Mountain. This God-Conferring Register was stolen by me.” Shen Gongbao admitted calmly.
Jiang Yuan looked incredulous. “Primordial Heavenly Lord is a sage. How could he possibly not know where the God-Conferring Register he forged has gone?”
“I naturally have my own way of dealing with that,” Shen Gongbao said with a confident smile.
Hearing this, Jiang Yuan asked no further questions. If the God-Conferring Register was in Shen Gongbao’s hands, Primordial Heavenly Lord was certainly aware of it. He might even have already guessed that Shen Gongbao was planning to seek refuge with Great Shang and attach himself to Jiang Yuan.
As for Shen Gongbao’s so-called confidence, Jiang Yuan did not care in the slightest.
How could a sage of heaven and earth, one of the Three Purities, be deceived by a mere Grand Luo Golden Immortal disciple?
“Since that is the case, what do you intend to do with this God-Conferring Register?” Jiang Yuan asked casually.
This thing needed the fortune of the Human Sovereign within him to be used. Unless he had nothing better to do, why would he willingly sacrifice his own fortune to confer gods?
To Jiang Yuan, it was little more than a scrap of little value.
Its only appeal was that it had been forged by a sage.
“Well...” Shen Gongbao hesitated, then said ingratiatingly, “I do not know either. If Your Majesty has need of it, I can offer it to you.”
Thinking it over carefully, Shen Gongbao realized that bringing up the God-Conferring Register before King Zhou was hardly likely to win favor. After all, to use it one had to draw upon the fortune of the Human Sovereign.
How could King Zhou possibly cut off one hand to save the other? And what did conferring gods have to do with him anyway?
He was already the sovereign of humanity. The significance was not great.
Besides, beyond allowing the gods on the register to, like him, absorb the faith of the human race and rise in cultivation, there was little else to recommend it.
At most, it would simply place a few more powerful immortals under Jiang Yuan’s command.
“Bring it up here and let me see it,” Jiang Yuan said indifferently.
At those words, a scroll appeared in Shen Gongbao’s hand from thin air. Its color was a pale yellow, yet it radiated a soul-shaking pressure.
A single glance was enough to tell that it had undoubtedly been forged by a sage.
Jiang Yuan took the God-Conferring Register into his hands. It was not heavy, probably because it did not yet bear the fortune of the Human Sovereign or the names of the gods.
He did not know what level of treasure it was. So long as it was above a Heaven-Assigned Spirit Treasure, he would not lose out; he could simply turn around and sell it to the system.
He would make a killing from it.
“Damn system, what grade of treasure is this God-Conferring Register? How many Tyrant Points can it be exchanged for?” Jiang Yuan’s first act after receiving the register was to summon the system.
The only use this thing had for him was to exchange it for Tyrant Points.
After all, he had no intention whatsoever of letting the God-Conferring Register absorb the Human Sovereign fortune within him.
“The God-Conferring Register is a Chaos Spirit Treasure. After absorbing the fortune of the Human Sovereign, it can rise to the level of a Chaos Supreme Treasure, on par with the Sword of Xuanyuan.”
“It can be exchanged for 888 Tyrant Points!”
Jiang Yuan was stunned.
What the hell?
It could be exchanged for that many Tyrant Points?
Wasn’t that equivalent to killing a Grand Luo Golden Immortal?
Its rank was actually this high? If it were allowed to advance into a Chaos Supreme Treasure, would it not become even more valuable?
Still, on reflection, it made sense. How could a treasure destined to confer gods in the future be an ordinary object?
Jiang Yuan suddenly felt a little reluctant to part with it. It would be ideal if it could ascend to a Chaos Supreme Treasure and confer rightful gods without needing to absorb his own fortune.
“Friendly reminder: the host may spend 888 Tyrant Points to raise this God-Conferring Register to the level of a Chaos Supreme Treasure, after which it will also gain the effect of conferring rightful gods,” the system said in a tempting voice.
This made Jiang Yuan’s heart leap with excitement. This damn system was truly formidable. It could even forge a Chaos Supreme Treasure on the level of the Sword of Xuanyuan?
“Damn system, since when have you become this impressive? I hardly recognize you anymore,” Jiang Yuan said in astonishment.
So there really was a hidden master by my side?
“It is not that the system can manufacture a Chaos Supreme Treasure. Rather, the God-Conferring Register already possesses the foundation of a Chaos Supreme Treasure. It only lacks a single chance to advance. The system is merely giving it a push,” the system explained.
At those words, Jiang Yuan immediately flew into a rage.
“Damn system, what do you mean by that? For something as simple as giving it a push, you want to scam me out of 888 Tyrant Points? Why don’t you go eat filth? You’re as shameless as they come!”
“If the host has any objections, you may release the Human Sovereign fortune within you and let the God-Conferring Register advance naturally. The system will not interfere,” the system said coolly.
Still trying to haggle with me? Did you think the system was Shen Gongbao?
“Get lost! This God-Conferring Register—I’d rather not have it at all!”
With that, Jiang Yuan exited the system.
Of course, he had no intention of really refusing to upgrade the register.
To him, Tyrant Points were merely a tool for trading with the system. They had no other purpose.
If he had enough Tyrant Points, Jiang Yuan would already have exchanged them with that damn system.
He only wanted to anger the system for a moment, because that thing had no doubt cheated him out of who knew how many Tyrant Points in secret.
Even a wage slave is still a person, damn bloodsucking system.
