Chapter 52: No Escape Even with Wings
*Thump!*
A slight resistance transmitted through his hand.
This let Shen Ye know that his spider silk had firmly anchored to the exterior of the building opposite.
He turned his head back.
A relaxed smile played on his lips.
The moon, hooked and sharp, reflected off his mask. It seemed as if the painted lips on the mask also curled into a strange, mocking arc.
"You said I had no wings to fly? Well, watch me escape. Farewell, the four of you."
A pull came from the spider silk. Shen Ye leaped, passing through the gap of a window over a meter high, and soared directly toward the opposite skyscraper.
Like a great bird, he flew through the air.
In a flash, he was approaching the building where the end of the silk was attached. He immediately adjusted his posture, controlling his momentum.
With a final *thump*, he landed with a slight tilt against the building's exterior wall.
He paused for a brief moment to identify his next target, and his gaze quickly locked onto another tower.
Then!
The tip of the spider silk launched again, sticking directly to a distant building.
*Whoosh!*
As his body began to drop, the tension from the silk reached his hand. Utilizing this force, he sped away, swinging into the distance.
The night moon was full and bright. The night wind howled.
Amidst the skyscrapers, Shen Ye swung back and forth, propelled by his spider silk. A sense of heroic pride welled up within him, as if he were soaring between heaven and earth.
This feeling!
It was exhilarating!
It was like the lines written by the ancients: "To ride a flying immortal and wander, to embrace the bright moon for eternity."
It was also like: "The great roc rises with the wind, soaring ninety thousand miles straight up."
Flight had always been a human dream since ancient times. One could never experience this kind of grandeur while inside an airplane.
...
Meanwhile, on the thirty-third floor of the Wande Group building, Nangong Zhu, Tong Chuchu, Monk Jierou, and Daoist Kanse stood with their mouths agape, wide enough to swallow a duck egg.
They watched in a stupor as "Chopstick Hero" zipped to another building.
Then, with a flash of white, he darted to the facade of an even more distant skyscraper.
A moment later, in the vast night of the city, the figure of the Chopstick Hero had vanished.
Just like that, he was gone!
"What happened? How did he just disappear? Did he fly away? But no matter how good one's lightness skill is, it should only allow for a brief float, not true flight," Tong Chuchu said, her eyes dazed.
"He didn't fly away," Nangong Zhu said, though she was shocked, her demeanor remained habitually calm. "Before he left, he fired a white line from his hand; it seemed to stick to the building opposite. It’s a bit like the spider silk from the movies. But even in the United States, that kind of spider silk is just a fantasy concept; they haven't even developed it themselves. Could some high-tech group have actually invented it?"
"Exactly. That kind of thread isn't easy to make. First, it has to stick to a building's facade and not break under extreme force. If it fails, it's a matter of life and death. I heard that when the Americans were researching this, many people fell mid-air and were smashed to their deaths. Plus, the line needs to be able to extend and retract, which involves advanced new materials," Tong Chuchu added coolly.
"What kind of high-tech group is behind this Chopstick Hero? But such a group shouldn't be able to escape our investigation."
"That is why I said from the beginning: this Chopstick Hero is full of mysteries."
Monk Jierou wore a mournful expression. "I was just mocking him, saying if he could escape, I would truly give up meat. Does this mean I have to stop eating meat? Amitabha, meat is just too delicious."
"Damn it, I also said if he escaped, I would eat this horsetail whisk of mine," Daoist Kanse said with difficulty, looking at his whisk, which was over a foot long with hundreds of white strands. He couldn't figure out where to start swallowing such a thing. Finally, he said helplessly, "Jierou, are you really going to give up meat?"
"Give it up? Of course. This time, I’m giving up pigeon meat," the monk said, smiling at the Daoist. "You, though, you really have to eat that whisk."
Daoist Kanse’s eyes darted around. "I’ve decided. I will eat the 'whisk'."
Monk Jierou couldn't help but gape. "You're really that ruthless? You're going to eat it?"
"Of course. I’ve decided to call this rack of lamb a 'whisk'. Then, I will eat the lamb. I am a man of my word." The Daoist chuckled. "Monk Jierou, I learned this from you."
"Are you two done yet?" Tong Chuchu cried out. "Big Sister Zhu, what now?"
Nangong Zhu stood with her hands behind her back. "That the Chopstick Hero could kill 'Heartless' Du Sha was beyond my expectations. That he could escape our encirclement using such an unimaginable method was also completely unexpected."
"How useless," a young man with dyed yellow hair, Hu Kuan, the captain of Special Action Team C, appeared out of nowhere. He looked at Nangong Zhu with heavy sarcasm. "Nangong Zhu, you’re called one of the best team captains. Yet, even with four of you surrounding him, the Chopstick Hero escaped. I wonder how you’ll explain this to the squad leader."
"How I explain it to the squad leader is my business, not yours," Nangong Zhu sneered. "Hu Kuan, this isn't exactly your jurisdiction, is it?"
"Oh, so the Wande Group is now under Captain Nangong's control? My apologies, my apologies." Hu Kuan lit a cigarette, projecting an attitude that dared her to challenge him. With this failed operation, Nangong Zhu’s prestige would naturally suffer.
Nangong Zhu ignored the meddlesome Hu Kuan and made a phone call.
"Squad leader, it’s me."
"The operation failed."
"The Chopstick Hero is stronger than I imagined—much stronger."
"He killed 'Heartless' Du Sha without suffering a single injury. Moreover, he possesses a strange piece of equipment, like the spider silk from the movies. He used it to swing away through the skyscrapers."
"Yes, it is my responsibility."
"I will return to accept my punishment."
"Understood."
Nangong Zhu hung up. Tong Chuchu asked worriedly, "Big Sister Zhu, how did it go? What did the squad leader say?"
"The squad leader didn't say much; he isn't pinning this entirely on me. He told us to keep investigating, business as usual," Nangong Zhu replied.
"That's a relief," Tong Chuchu sighed, patting her exceptionally "majestic" chest.
...
Meanwhile, on the ground outside the Wande Group, the streets were packed.
The dense crowd stared up at the sky in a daze.
They still hadn't recovered from what they had just witnessed.
The Chopstick Hero had actually swung through the high-rises just like Spider-Man, relying on a single white thread.
This!
This!
This!
It was too cool!
After a moment of silence, the crowd erupted into unimaginable enthusiasm, cheering and shouting!
